How I Found and Ranked The Best Grammar Checkers?
Picking the best solutions in a market full of alternatives is a grueling task.
But there's a method to the madness, and here it is:
- As I mentioned above, I've come across different grammar tools in the course of my career. Some are excellent, and others not so great. I had about 20 options that I analyzed in terms of functionality, pricing, customer service, and ease of use.
- I then created accounts for the options that seemed promising, to experiment with their features (suggestions, dictionaries, explanations, or spell-checking). My shortlisting began here.
- I also needed to find out what previous user experiences for each software were, so I read tons of user reviews. Here I got both negative and positive feedback, which helped me narrow down my list further.
- Lastly, I asked myself some questions that any buyer searching for the best grammar apps would, such as:
- Does the software have all the features that I need and, therefore, offer value for my money?
- Is the solution user-friendly?
- Does the platform have responsive customer support?
So, now, let's have a look at the top ten solutions.
Best Grammar Checking Tools
Here are comprehensive reviews of each software.
1. Grammarly

Makes grammar suggestions
Offers learning points
Highlights misused words
You may know Grammarly as an American multinational, but its roots are Ukrainian. Alex Shevchenko, Max Lytvyn, and Lider Dymtro, were this platform's original authors and launched it in 2009.
Today, Grammarly Inc, a Fortune 500 company, owns the app. It has offices in Kyiv Ukraine, Vancouver, Canada, New York, and San Francisco. Teams at Cisco, Dell, Expensify, and Expedia use this tool.
Features
Here’s what Grammarly has to offer:
Correctness
Grammarly correctors help keep your grammar, punctuation, and spelling in check. If there’s anything wrong in your text, this feature will highlight it, offer a suggestion, and you can choose to accept it by clicking on it.
Delivery
It's normal to wonder whether you're connecting with your audience. This feature helps you know if your content is making a good impression on your readers.
Clarity
It's paramount to ensure your audience can understand your content if you intend to pass a message. Grammarly has a metric to help you know if you're communicating clearly.
Goals
You can set this tool to meet the expectations of whoever you're writing for, be it experts, knowledgeable or general audiences. You can either pick formal, neutral, or informal.
If the app notices that your content is deviating from what is ideal for your reader, it alerts you. Other settings that you can set with this feature include domain (casual, academic, business), tone (neutral, joyful, confident), and intent (tell a story, describe, inform or convince).
Overall score
This software calculates your work's overall score from 1 to 100%. This result puts into account things like readability, word count, and vocabulary.
Here's the best thing:
This software breaks down your performance into easy to understand one-liner explanations. No use getting a score without getting information on what needs improvement, right?
Plagiarism checker
The last thing you want is to plagiarize anyone's work because this might make your reader lose trust. Fortunately, the Grammarly checker detects plagiarism; hence you don't have to use multiple tools.
Human proofreading
Sometimes you just need the human eye to give your content a once-over. This solution has the "Get Expert Help" feature to help polish your text.
Passive voice detector
Using an active voice can make your content sound more clear. Grammarly alerts you of every instance of passive sentences.
Advanced features
Here are Grammarly's advanced features:
Grammarly keyboard
Statistics show that 81% of Americans and 78% of UK adults own smartphones. The gadgets provide an easier way for people to communicate, whether work-related (field/remote staff) or for leisure.
If you need to send out a tweet or reply to a quick email using your iOS or Android device, Grammarly's got you!
The language tool has the “Grammarly Keyboard” that can help you produce more unambiguous texts, or error-free emails or tweets.
Engagement
Engagement is essential if you wish to appeal more to your readers. This software highlights how engaging your content is even on the Grammarly free check version. This feature will measure the metric by giving pointers like "a bit bland," "engaging," or "very engaging."
Security
Security is always a significant concern. Grammarly phone apps and browser extensions are safe.
Although it hasn't always been that way:
In 2018, a Googler, Tavis Ormandy discovered that the grammar checker's browser extension posed a severe security flaw. Any webpage could hijack a user's session on the platform!
However, the company was quick to fix the bug. The mobile apps also encrypt your information, so no one else gets to eavesdrop on your private data.
Apps and integrations
Grammarly has apps for desktop, iOS, and Android. You can also use the software on Windows, iOS, Android, Linux, Mac, and cloud.
Unfortunately, you can't integrate the software with desktop apps apart from:
- Outlook
- Microsoft Word
You can also link applications with web extensions (е.g., .com) after installing the Grammarly browser extension. Here are some examples:
- Note Joy
- Slack
- Skype
- Zoho Desk
Pricing
Is there a free version of Grammarly?
Yes, there is.
This English grammar checker has a plan that costs $0 and paid options. Here are their rates:
- Premium - $11.66/month for school and work
- Business - $12.50/month for teams of 3 to 149 and comes with priority support
This platform also has a human proofreading feature. Its pricing depends on the number of days that you need the complete work back.
The rates start from as low as $12.12 for three days to $ 95.06 for 30 minutes.
*Grammarly @edu is also available for learning institutions with prices ranging from $500.00/year for five users to $1200 per year for 20 users. Contact the company for a quote if you have a larger group.
Verdict
Grammarly is the best grammar checker and proofreading software with plenty of features to help improve your writing. Some of them include correctness, goals, plagiarism checker, human proofreader, clarity, engagement, passive voice detector, and editor settings.
You can rely on this tool to find plenty of errors that would typically go undetected. However, double-check some suggestions that it may offer - no solution is flawless.
In other words, always check to see if a suggestion makes sense. Your sentence might be correct, after all.
2. WhiteSmoke

Writing tutorial
Document templates
Inbuilt translator
WhiteSmoke has been in the market since 1981. The company's subsidiaries include Wise Data Media Ltd, KIBO Inc., and GMS Digital Ltd.
Features
The following are WhiteSmoke's features.
Grammar checker
Some mistakes can be downright embarrassing. Others can cost your business, especially if you rely on web presence.
WhiteSmoke can give your text an English grammar check whether you're writing a blog post, pitch, email, name it.
This solution not only detects errors but also offers suggestions on how to correct your content.
Here are some of the things that the platform will be looking for in your texts:
- Run-on sentences
- Fragments
- Incomplete sentences
- Dangling modifiers
Style checker
Style goes beyond grammar and spell checking. This tool checks the presence of monotony or tense mixing and gives you correction options.
Spell checker
Are you wondering whether it's "colleague or "colligue?"
Or perhaps you're quickly typing an email you were supposed to send by 10 am, but have been in a meeting until 9.45 am - a guaranteed recipe for typos.
WhiteSmoke has a spell checker that corrects your errors as you type along. Also, it proofreads your work, as well as checking for punctuation mistakes.
Punctuation checking
If you often get confused by punctuation, WhiteSmoke is perfect for you. This is one of the best correct grammar and punctuation checkers on this list. The solution will help you find instances of wrong usage or absence of punctuation while giving you suggestions/tips.
Advanced features
Here are WhiteSmoke's advanced features.
Pre-made templates
Writer's block is real y'all.
You no longer have to spend five hours trying to figure out your first paragraph, thanks to WhiteSmoke. This tool comes with 100+ inbuilt templates to help you write whatever you need like a pro.
Translation
This is one of the best grammar checkers because it allows you to translate your content to or from 55 languages. This feature uses Statistical Machine Translation (SMT) to calculate the highest probability of accuracy based on millions of texts that experts have translated.
Tutorial
It helps when you know why exactly a software has corrected your mistake so that you don’t repeat in the future. WhiteSmoke offers video tutorials and explanations to guide you.
Apps and integrations
White Smoke has native as well as mobile (Android and iOS) apps. It's also available on the web so you can use it on any internet-connected device.
You can integrate this solution with:
- Word
- Outlook
Pricing
WhiteSmoke doesn't have a free trial period or version. However, it has a demo that you can watch to see how it works. Here are the software's plans and their rates:
- Web - $59.95/year or $124.95/3 years
- Premium - $79.95/year or $199.55/3 years
- Business - $137.95/year or $317.5 when billed annually
The most surprising thing that I found is that WhiteSmoke has the wording "Free online grammar checker" on its site.
Well, there's no free version.
I reached out to support, and they confirmed the site doesn't have a free version. In my opinion, this type of messaging can be very misleading.
Verdict
WhiteSmoke is a reliable grammar tool offering great features, such as translation, templates, tutorials, punctuation, style, and grammar checker.
Of course, no grammar checking tool is 100% watertight. I tried to check a 500-word document on the desktop version, and I quickly discovered that I wouldn't get the results that I needed.
The solution has a 10,000 character limit on the desktop version.
However, things were different on the web version. I was able to copy-paste the entire document and got the results that I needed, fast.
3. Ginger

Easy to use
Audio read back
Personal trainer
Yael Karov and Avner Zangvil, a married couple, founded Ginger in 2007. This solution initially targeted dyslexic people, intending to help them understand and communicate better.

*This company offers a 7-day money-back guarantee on all its plans.
However, there's a catch:
The offer is just for first-time clients.
Verdict
Ginger is a robust tool that can help you write on API, phone, Word, or through your browser with confidence. Some of its best features include but are not limited to, grammar checking, text-to-speech, personal dictionary, personal trainer, define, tutorial, and sentence rephraser.
Ginger doesn't have a trial period. However, it has a 7-day money-back guarantee, which is more than enough for you to check out if it’s suitable for you.
It is kind of sad that the solution doesn't have a plagiarism checker. The good news is that I have plenty of other options with this feature on my list.
4. ProWritingAid

Discounted yearly/lifetime plans

Flexible payment plans
Chris Banks created ProWritingAid in 2012. Some of the companies that trust this tool are Amazon, Equifax, HomeServe, US Bureau of Labor Statistics, Scholly, and BDO.

Advanced features
Here are ProWriting Aids advanced features:
Clichés
Most people don't like to read clichés, so no matter how much you're in love with them, avoid them. Sometimes they come so naturally that it's hard to notice them in your writing. This tool will highlight all instances of usage of the phrases for you.

Verdict
ProWritingAid is a reliable tool. Some of its features include robust reporting, plagiarism, cliché, thesaurus, readability, error fixing, and many others.
One of the most significant drawbacks of this solution is that it includes a plagiarism checker only on its Premium Plus plan.
Although you can use this version on Mac when on the cloud, you can’t use it with the Word integration.
5. Hemingway Editor

No logins for online version
Affordable one-off cost
No internet connection necessary
You may know Earnest Hemmingway for his amazingly clear and cohesive short stories. The legend inspired two brothers, Adam and Ben Long, to create this solution.
Features
Here are Hemingway's features:
Readability score
This feature will help remove all ambiguity from your text, making it easier to read. It will help you work on areas that lack clarity, making you more connected with your readers.
With this solution, you'll correct passive speech, complicated words, long sentences, dull wording, and much more. The readability score will help you produce outstanding work.
Editor
Hemingway is one of the best grammar checkers because it highlights every mistake in your piece. It uses color-coding the different issues, making it easy for you to spot them.
One-click publishing
Uploading work to WordPress or Medium requires a lot of steps. With Hemmingway, you can easily publish your content in both places at the click of a button.
Formatting area
You can make your text bold or italic, add bullets, numbers hyperlinks, all on Hemingway. Most tools don't have this feature, forcing you to switch between different applications to format.
Offline functionality
You don't need an internet connection to use this software.
So:
Whether you're working from the forest, or don't want the constant distraction from the Web, you're good to go with Hemingway.
Apps and integrations
Hemingway has apps for Mac and Windows. You can also use it on any device with an internet connection. This solution offers integrations with:
- Any WordPress blog
- Medium
Pricing
Hemmingway is a free grammar checker for its online version.
Its desktop apps for both Windows and Mac cost $19.99. Note that this is a one-off payment.
Verdict
Hemingway is uncomplicated, but can still deliver everything you need from such a tool. Some of its features include readability score, formatting tool, color-coded text corrections, suggestions.
One of the things that I loved about this solution is its straightforward pricing. It has just one package, so nothing to be confused about.
That's not all:
Once you pay for the initial subscription, you no longer need to renew your packages. The company will ensure that they update your products with every upgrade.
As if that's not enough, you can use this tool offline.
Awesome, isn't it?
As much as I loved using this software, I couldn't help but notice that it didn't have a plagiarism checker. It also has limited integrations, but I was willing to switch through different apps just to use it.
6. After the Deadline

Multi-language
Free tool
Uses SSL security
Automatic, WordPress's parent company, owns After the Deadline. The technology that the software uses is under the General Public Licence on GNU.
The software’s name comes from a column in the New York Times. It’s popular for publishing content regarding grammar, style and spelling issues that the paper’s writers encounter at work.
Features
Here’s what After the Deadline has to offer:
Spell checking
On its website, After the Deadline promises to give you the correct spelling 9/10 times. The site also claims to use artificial intelligence for the recommendations.
I ran a text full of errors through the checker, but the report I got was that there were no mistakes.
I used the contact form available on the software's website to reach out to support regarding the issue. I still haven't heard from the company.
Error explanation
After the Deadline claims not only to detect mistakes in your prose but also explains why it highlighted them.
Well, I wasn't able to enjoy this feature since I didn't get any results after running my text through the tool.
Grammar checking
This grammatical checker also claims to protect you from common writing errors. According to the website, there are grammar rules such as:
- Repeated words
- Confused words such as there/their/they're, your/you're and many more
- Errors in determiner agreement
- Mistakes in auxiliary verb agreement
Style checking
This tool also uses plain English as its guide to highlight style issues. You get to find out things like:
- Writing in more straightforward language to make your text clearer
- Locate passive voice usage
- How to avoid using redundant phrases
- Bias language and clichés
Apps and integrations
This solution has no dedicated apps. It's, however, cloud-based and is supposed to work well on Windows and Mac.
Here are some software/applications that you can integrate it with:
- Firefox
- BuddyPress
- Chrome
- Open Office
- Windows Live Writer
Sounds good on paper. But it could be a hurdle for a non-techie.
I tried to integrate it with Firefox, and I got instructions upon instructions complete with code.
Pricing
This grammar checker is free, so you won't have to part with a single dollar to use it.
Verdict
This software helps with checking basic grammar for users that want a free software. Its features include suggestions, mistake explanations, spelling, grammar, and misused word checking.
It allows translation between different international languages. However, it can't differentiate between American, British, Australian, and other English variations.
I found After the Deadline not to be very reliable to check grammar issues.
I copy-pasted an excerpt into the tool, and it returned the message, "No writing errors were found."Yet the mistakes were still there staring back at me.
This software doesn't have a dictionary feature. However, it has an "Ignore Always" option. Once you press this feature, it won't highlight your words or sentence on consequent usage.
The good news is that we have plenty of options on our list to help you write in different English dialects.
7. SpellCheckPlus

Text archiving
Affordable
Vocabulary enhancement
Nadaclair Language Technologies Inc owns SpellCheckPlus.
Features
The following are SpellCheckPlus's features.
Content archiving
SpellCheckPlus is one of the best grammar checkers because it stores your text. That means that you can go back to something that you had written in the past if you want to make references or see how far you've come.
Error detection
This tool does an excellent job highlighting grammatical and spelling errors. It also color-codes the mistakes so that you can easily spot them.
Note that this feature only works when you click on "check text" and you have to make corrections manually.
This is what I mean:
You can't click on the system corrections like with other grammar checking tools. For instance, if you have a spelling error such as "compter," it will give you the right word, “computer," but you'll have to type this out.
This is one sure way to help you learn. It's easier to remember a word when you type it out the letters.
Vocabulary enrichment
The creators of SpellCheckPlus early picked the right name.
This software does more than checking spelling, the reason it’s maybe the best grammar checker that’s free. It has vocabulary enrichment to help learners enhance their English.
Suggestions
The solution gives you the correct phrases or words. Here, you get suggestions for different contexts, allowing you to pick the right one.
Grammar score
You can check how good or bad your grammar is, using this feature. It calculates the result based on the number of errors and the total number of words.
Apps and integrations
This solution has both Android and iOS apps. It's also web-based so you can use it on Windows or Mac.
It allows Microsoft Word integrations.
Pricing
SpellCheckPlus has a free grammar and punctuation checker and corrector version. It also has a 5-day trial period for you to try out its premium plan features.
This software costs $14.99 for a one-year individual license.
*For groups, you have to contact the company for a quote.
Verdict
SpellCheckPlus is a useful tool for people that are not native English speakers. The solution stores history, highlights grammar, and spelling issues, gives suggestions, and enhances vocabulary.
Note that the tool doesn't check for plagiarism or passive voice.
Here's my experience when I attempted to sign up for the 5-day trial:
I wasn't able to use my account instantly. After signing up, the system presented me with a blank page. No matter how many times I refreshed it, nothing happened.
Then I decided to read the terms and conditions, and this is where I read a couple of interesting statements, for instance:
"No guarantees are made that this site will find any or all spelling and grammar errors in a text."
I also learned that the company shuts down accounts with more than 50 requests in a day. That means that if you don't get a message for "successful signup," don't resend your signup details.
I tried going back to the editor to use the software's web version. Unfortunately, I had to shut the program down and restart it to access it.
The good news is that I was able to work with the web version.

Yet another reason why Scribens is one of the best grammar checkers. It lets you type in a word, check out its meaning, conjugation, and synonyms.

Scribens has apps for Windows and Mac. You can integrate it applications such as:
- Outlook
- Word
- Open Office
- Browsers(Google Chrome and Firefox)
- Gmail

Pricing
This grammar, spelling, and punctuation checker freeware requires no payment. There's a premium version available that opens up more features. Here are the rates for the paid plans:
- 1 month - 5.90 €
- 3 Months - 14.90 €
- 1 year - 39.90 €
Verdict
Sribens uses an easy to understand the algorithm to check for grammar and spelling mistakes. Its features include dictionaries, grammar, spelling and punctuation checking, statistics, synonyms, color key, etc.
This software's biggest weakness is that it doesn't have a plagiarism checker...which seems to be a trend at this point.
I also noticed that it didn't highlight instances of passive speech in my text.
But I loved how easy it was to work with it. I also noticed it gives lots of integration options, which is a big plus.
9. Reverso

Fast turnarounds
100 language pairs
Audio translations
SoftSimmo Inc, a company that has been in operation since 1998, released Reverso Context in 2013. Reverso acquired Fleex in 2015 and released a mobile app in 2018. As of July 2019, the software had over 95 million active monthly users.
Features
Here are Reverso's features.
Spelling and grammar checking
This spelling and grammar checker helps you correct spelling as well as grammar mistakes. Be sure to recheck your work, as some suggestions may not be accurate.
Dictionary
