Best for: SMBs without full-time HR staff
What Is Bambee?
Bambee is an HR outsourcing service intended for small and medium businesses. This LA-based company, founded in 2016, professes that every business in America should have access to competent HR managers. A noble goal, for sure!
Bambee is a web-based platform without a mobile app — which is a shame. On the brighter side, it’s available in all fifty states and used in more than twenty industries. Notable customers include Comfort Inn, Domino’s, and Fantastic Sams.
So, what can you gain from this solution?
Bambee grants you a dedicated HR manager based on your company’s size, industry, location, and culture. They’ll help you establish policies, manage onboarding, terminations, compliance, and more!
Most importantly, they’ll help you navigate HR regulations, labor laws, and compliance agreements. You can contact them during business hours via phone, email, or chat.
Additionally, the software’s complementary auto-features will take care of routine tasks. Still, it lacks the range that specialized HR management apps have.
So, is it worth your money and time?
That’s precisely what this Bambee review aims to find out.
Let’s look at the service’s core features and see what can benefit your company.
There’s always room for improvement in your business’ HR performance. And that’s where regular audits come into play! Bambee’s autopilot functions will track your:
- Employee records
- Hiring & onboarding process
- Performance evaluations.
Based on its findings, it will identify potential problem areas and provide effective mitigation strategies.
HR policies are the backbone of employee management. Everything in your workplace environment circles back to those guidelines. They lay down the rules for attendance, code of conduct, leave, promotion, etc.
Fortunately, Bambee will streamline HR policy implementation in your company. It will check that all core policies are valid, signed, and reaffirmed semi-annually.
Furthermore, your Human Resources expert will craft custom policies based on your company’s culture. So, even if you need specific guidelines, you’re covered!
Training & Certifications
Bambee also offers in-app training courses for your staff. They cover workplace safety, OSHA, leadership, sexual harassment prevention, etc. You can request custom bundles for your specific industry, as well.
In any case, the software will monitor your employee’s training progress and issue certificates of completion.
Don’t worry about record-keeping — the Smart Cabinet will take care of it. You can find this convenient feature on the Bambee dashboard.
It will store and secure vital HR documents and hold them to EEOC Document Retention Standards. As dull as it sounds, meeting these needs can ensure compliance and avoid any unnecessary misunderstandings, aka lawsuits.
Naturally, the app will also aid you in staff performance tracking. You can keep an eye on everyone’s progress thanks to the Bambee report cards.
You can assess how well they’re doing and mark it as:
- Needs improvement
The report cards allow you to open up a chat window to give praise and constructive feedback. It’s a simple and effective system!
You need to create a safe space for your employees to speak their minds. The Bambee Employee Voices feature can serve as a perfect outlet.
Staff is free to speak up publicly or anonymously about workplace issues, coworker concerns, roles & responsibilities, and more. Additionally, they can share what they appreciate about the company! Every input is valuable.
Unlimited Chat Support
This is the service’s best selling point: Bambee offers a dedicated HR manager you can reach via phone, chat, and email. You can count on their support from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM PST Monday to Friday.
The HR specialist is mostly here to provide the human touch and nuance the autopilot features lack. That means answering all your questions, tailoring your HR policies, and dealing with sensitive issues.
For example, they’ll coach you on how to resolve delicate termination situations and avoid costly mistakes.
Need some help in understanding State and Federal Labor Regulations?
The Bambee app can aid you in several areas of compliance, such as:
- Wage & Hour
- Workplace Safety & Health
- Workers’ Compensation
- Employee Benefits
- Veteran’s Rights
- The Family and Medical Leave Act
- Plant Closings & Layoffs.
If your company is at risk of breaching these laws, your assigned HR specialist will guide you back on track. Typical violations include:
- Improper payment for hours worked
- Incorrect exemptions
- De Minimis, Other-Than-Serious, Serious, and other OSHA Violations
- Failure to provide workers’ compensation insurance
- Illegally denying benefits
- Inadequate maintenance of records
- Failure to give appropriate notice for company downsizing/closing
You don’t need your own payroll system — the Bambee app can handle that. This optional add-on will make short work of calculating wages and taxes for your staff.
Let’s take a quick look at its capabilities.
Bambee’s payroll system supports 2-day direct deposits. It comes through with reliant and speedy payments. It also automatically calculates government taxes. And it will make sure your employees receive the correct employment classification.
Ease of Use and Interface
I’m glad to report that the software excels in ease of use. Even complete novices will quickly get the hang of things. Take one look at the Bambee dashboard, and you’ll see what I mean.
You can find all the features on its left side:
- Roadmap — lays out the necessary actions to set up your account
- HR Conversations — essentially your inbox, where you can chat with your HR expert
- HR Policy — contains all your documents and policies, along with updates on their status
- Staff Folder — keeps your team’s info, such as employee files, corrective actions, and operations
- Report Cards — includes past and current report carts with performance reviews
- Cabinet — keeps your confidential documents vaulted.
Everything is clearly labeled and easily accessible — no need for digging through layers and layers of settings.
There are no user guides available, but don’t let that deter you. Every single tool is intuitive.
The service offers several monthly/annual plans based on your company’s size. The annual options let you save up to 20%. There’s no free trial available.
In addition to that, there’s a hefty one-time setup fee. It costs $500 for businesses with up to 19 team members and $1000 for companies with 20-49 staff.
Here are your options:
- 1-4 employees — $99 per month (billed monthly) or $79 per month (billed annually)
- 5-19 employees — $199 per month (billed monthly) or $159 per month (billed annually)
- 20-49 employees — $299 per month (billed monthly) or $239 per month (billed annually)
- 50-500 employees — custom plan.
The Bambee pricing packages are relatively affordable on their own. They are dirt cheap when compared to the cost of having in-house HR managers.
But, the high setup fee seems unfair, especially considering the tricky refund policy. According to Terms & Conditions, there’s a 30-day refund for your entire subscription fee.
However, refunds of the setup fee are only available if “no services or audit have been provided.” That’s a serious gamble for small businesses on a tight budget.
You can also include Bambee’s guided payroll, which is free for the first year. After which, it will cost $5 per employee per month, on top of your subscription.
But, there’s more.
If you opt out of this feature as you’re signing up, Bambee elevates the cost of every package! So, instead of paying $99 per month for the simplest plan, you’ll pay $119 per month. That’s an underhanded pricing move that unnecessarily punishes users right from the get-go.
Other than that, the plans don’t differ much regarding services.
The cheapest option is the only one that doesn’t include phone support. On top of that, the custom plan will pair you up with an HR Director instead of a manager.
You can’t have a complete Bambee review without testing the service’s customer support!
So, here’s the deal.
You can contact the reps via email or phone during work hours, 8 AM-6 PM PST. They’ve replied to my email a couple of hours later — decent response time, overall. They thoroughly answered my question and were polite, too.
However, you'll notice some repetitive complaints if you check out sites like G2 and Trustpilot. According to those users, Bambee has poor customer service because it’s hard to reach the reps, and many were unhelpful.
That directly contradicts my pleasant experience. But, still worth knowing if you're considering this company.
Bambee VS BambooHR
One of Bambee’s biggest competitors is BambooHR. It’s one of the best HR software for freelancers. Let’s see what they have in common and what sets them apart.
Both software are web-based. However, BambooHR also has a mobile app for Android and iOS. And the differences don’t stop there! They also contrast in their tools and general work model.
Let me explain.
Bambee isn’t full-fledged HR management software. It’s an outsourcing service with some helpful features thrown in. It specializes in performance tracking, communication, and compensation. You’ll have to consult with your assigned manager for everything else.
That’s why Bambee doesn’t have HR tools for recruiting, onboarding, offboarding, etc.
Compare that to BambooHR — which has everything you need for those tasks and more, including:
- Time tracking
- Reporting and analytics
- Applicant Tracking System
- Employee Self-Service features
- Integrations - open API and partner apps.
Still, you won’t get precious advice on compliance with labor regulations and similar situations. It’s not an outsourcing provider like Bambee.
But what about pricing?
Bambee offers several pricing plans based on company size but no free trial. On the other hand, BambooHR’s price is undisclosed. You’ll have to reach out to its reps for a quote. The refund policy is similarly opaque and unclear. And there’s no free trial option.
So, what’s my final take on Bambee VS BambooHR?
If you need an all-in-one Human Resources solution, BambooHR is a more suitable candidate. Alternatively, if you require HR assistance, Bambee will pair you up with a specialist. Still, both services exhibit troubling pricing practices that you should consider before committing.
Bambee Review - Verdict
Bambee’s combo of HR outsourcing and management tools is ambitious but imperfect. Having an expert that knows your company inside-out at your disposal is an advantage. It also has straightforward features for communication and compensation. Generally, it’s a very novice-friendly app.
However, it lacks some essential HR tools that make recruiting, onboarding, and similar tasks more manageable. A mobile app would be nice, too, for users on the move. On top of it all, shady pricing policies unnecessarily sour the whole thing.
In truth, SMBs that require guidance in sensitive HR matters can benefit from this service.
Does Bambee do payroll?
Yes, Bambee’s guided payroll is an optional add-on. It grants you 2-day direct deposits and automatic tax calculation. It also has integrated HR support.
How do I cancel Bambee?
To cancel your subscription, you’ll need to email firstname.lastname@example.org. However, it’s best to do so before it renews to avoid unnecessary billing.
Is Bambee legit?
Yup, Bambee is legit! Each one of its HR managers is a certified professional in the field. You don’t need to worry about leaving your company in untrained hands. And if you still have doubts, note that this review joins the ranks of other positive Bambee reviews, though with some reservations.
