What is Zenefits?

Zenefits was founded by former CEO Parker Conrad and Laks Srini, in 2013 in San Francisco. The initial idea of the software was to create a service that helps small and midsize businesses to navigate insurance quotes and manage employee benefits. It was targeted towards companies handling health insurance coverage. The following year, the software was further upgraded with commuter spending, flexible spending, and Zenefits 401 (k) support.

Currently, the platform is one of the best human resources software solutions for businesses, regardless of their size. Zenefits comes with an extensive set of functionalities, as well as intuitive administration features. You can also add features to complement your business. 

The best part? 

Help comes from real human advisors, as opposed to AI.

The Zenefits software proves to be best suitable for small to midsize businesses. Its BA functionality is more in-depth than you’d expect. By incorporating more features, like electronic data exchange or plan building, you will get a top-notch platform. 

Zenefits’ payroll add-on is not the best for small to midsize businesses. It has too many advanced features. Because of its modern approach to human resource management, benefits, navigation tools, and overall capacity, it’s better suited for larger businesses

Hiring and Onboarding

Thanks to this feature, you can onboard new employees in less than 10 minutes. You can send offer letters with a click of a button with one of the templates offered on the site or with your own. The company is partnered with Checkr, so you can do thorough background checks without leaving the platform. That’s something we often see mentioned in Zenefits reviews.

New employees can even onboard themselves via the Zenefits app or through the website. As a consequence, tax documents (W-4’s and I-9’s) are digitally created based on the information provided. On top of that, new employees get login data for Zenefits’ partners automatically. The entire process is paperless, thanks to electronic signatures.

Employee Management

Managing your employees can be challenging, especially if you offer remote work options. This feature will help with cross-functional communication and better company efficiency thanks to org charts. They include any contact information your hires are willing to share. Employees can update data through any device and synced platform. Also, with Zenefits adding events is a breeze.

You also get real-time data syncing. Zenefits’ HR platform works effortlessly for all employees, including full-timers, freelancers, independent contractors, and consultants.

Business Intelligence

You can keep an eye on your whole organization. You’ll get reports about:

We chose the first two as part of the testing for this Zenefits review and were quite happy with what we got. 

Documents Management 

All documents are safely stored and auto-generated. You will have controlled access to payroll and tax documents, offer letters, confidentiality agreements, and much more.

Regardless of the device in use, you can securely upload, update, and categorize your documents like with any document management software. Another huge plus often mentioned in Zenefits reviews.


Payroll is available to all users that want to purchase this add-on for $8. Zenefits has no free payroll add-on. The good news is that you can opt-out at any point.

Just keep in mind that this feature is best suited for large scale businesses, as it comes with a lot of advanced features. All the more, each payroll is unique as it is suited specifically for your business. 

You get unlimited payruns, direct deposits, garnishments support, tips reporting, contractor payments, pay rates and multiple schedules, etc.


Еverythig is better with Zenefits' Benefits! This feature was primarily made with a focus on health insurance. Its leading technology, however, has made it possible to administer and manage plans for any type of business.

Time Tracking

Thanks to this feature, you will be able to bring together all sectors, including HR, benefits, and payroll. The Zenefits time tracking tool allows you to:

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg! Imagine the traditional clocking-in method that has been upgraded to fit into the modern business world.

You will be able to create and manage your company’s PTO policy. It will automatically be available to your employees as well as copied into payroll and scheduling sectors. Employees can only make requests, while admins can manage and approve them.

If you are worried about things running smoothly, you can set time-off blackout dates for additional security. PTO is calculated automatically. That was our favorite discovery when researching for this Zeneits review.

Zenefits Apps and Integrations

Zenefits is a cloud-based system, so all your information is safely stored and preserved. Similarly, users can access the platform through both Android and iOS devices. 

In some Zenefits reviews, users have pointed out that admins have a harder time navigating the app compared to employees. It still requires some significant upgrades to get it to a higher level.

Even if you are using independent applications with Zenefits, you will be able to automatically receive notifications or manage the platform. The software works with multiple different apps and programs.

Customer Support

The platform offers a pretty extensive knowledge base. It is divided into two separate sections — one for administrators, and the other one for employees

Administrators can find help with hiring, time off, attendance, plans and billing, medical, performance management, payroll, and much more. Employees can find information about commuter benefits, health savings accounts, time off, Zenefits cards and claims, etc.

On top of that, you can type in your question in the knowledge base. If you can’t find the answer, you can always contact the Zenefits support team by submitting a form. Keep in mind that there are separate forms for customers and people simply looking around.

There is a live support chat. All you need to do is click the cloud button located in the bottom right corner of the screen and get in touch with one of the agents. 

When we contacted the support team for our Zenefits review, we found them not as prompt as we would have liked. You are first greeted by a chatbot and from there you can select the option you need, for example sales or scheduling a demo. Although the support team is professional, we had to deduct points due to slow response time.

You can send an email to support@zenefits.com. Unfortunately, the slow response time is also translated to the email support team. You can also give them a call at (888) 249-3263. Zenefits has offices in three countries, in five different locations, including Canada, the United States, and India.

Zenefits Pricing

The platform offers three different packages, all of which are offered on both a monthly and a yearly payment plan.

Monthly plans:

  • Essentials package — $10 per month/per employee
  • Growth package — $18 per month/per employee
  • Zen package — $27 per month/per employee

Annual plans:

  • Essentials package — $8 per month/per employee
  • Growth package — $14 per month/per employee
  • Zen package — $21 per month/per employee

The annual plan is billed immediately upon signing the contract, while the monthly plan is billed on the anniversary of the signing date. Keep in mind that you can cancel your monthly subscription if you want, but be sure to do it in a timely manner so as to avoid any additional charges.

The Еssentials package comes with core HR, Zenefits time and attendance, integrations, and mobile app. The Growth package adds compensation management and performance management on top of that. The Zen one includes the people hub, well-being, and employee engagement service features as well.

If you are interested in additional enhancement, you can purchase add-ons on top of your base plans. Currently, Zenefits offers three features — payroll, advisory services, and broker services. 

If you opt for the monthly pricing plan, you can add the payroll feature for $6 per month or per employee, the advisory services for $8 per month or per employee, and broker services for $5 per month or per employee.

Annual pricing plans offer slightly more affordable add-ons, and they are all charged per month or per employee.

Keep in mind that if you wish to implement add-ons, you will need to purchase a package for at least 5 employees.

Zenefits Review - Verdict

When talking about Zenefits’ capabilities and features, we mainly have good things to say. Ultimately, if you are looking for a strong HR- and BI-oriented platform, this is the one. If you, however, are a small business owner and you need that payroll feature, you might need to look somewhere else.

The biggest disappointment, according to Zenefits reviews, is how glitchy the app is if you’re using it as an admin.

We’d love to see those issues resolved, but even now, the platform is one of the best options on the market. 


How much does Zenefits cost?

Zenefits has monthly and annual options. The minimum price that you can pay for the annual plan is $8 per month, while the minimum price for the monthly payment system is $10. If you want the medium-sized package, you will need to set aside $14 or $18, depending on your payment system. The package with the most features is between $21 or $27.

Does Zenefits process payroll?

Yes, but you will need to purchase the payroll feature additionally. Zenefits payroll pricing depends on whether you are paying for the package annually or monthly. For the monthly pricing plan, you will need to pay an additional $8 for the payroll feature. You get it for free if you choose to pay annually.

Is Zenefits safe?

All security measures are up-to-date and state-of-the-art. The platform uses end-to-end encryption for data in transit (TLS) and data at rest (AES-256). We didn’t encounter any complaints about security in other Zenefits reviews.
