What Is ShipWorks?

ShipWorks is fully customizable shipping software. It makes the managing of online orders and shipping hassle-free.

The ShipWorks app enables you to send out your merchandise via major shipping carriers in the United States - USPS, UPS, FedEx, etc. You can directly integrate it with the best ecommerce platforms to automatically download and organize your orders across dozens of digital storefronts.

Thanks to its powerful capabilities, you can print labels for domestic and international shipments with ease. Also, ShipWorks lets you post tracking information quickly. It generates reports to measure your business’s productivity and efficiency.

The ShipWorks team is based in St. Louis, Missouri.

This multi-carrier software has an average rating of four stars on Trustpilot. Despite being considered Excellent, this verdict has come from less than five ShipWorks reviews. On Capterra, thе app has received a rating of 4.4 out of 5 stars from 30 ShipWorks reviews.

Less than 40 people don’t speak for the entire ShipWorks user base. But it’s impressive how no one has given it a failing mark so far.

So, why do online retailers seem to like ShipWorks a lot?

Let’s find out.

ShipWorks Features

In this ShipWorks review, we’ll shine a light on its key features to show what it can and can’t do.

Windows Compatibility

There’s no ShipWorks for Mac yet -  the app is Windows-based. But there are workarounds at your disposal if you don’t use computers powered by the Microsoft operating system.

Worry not.

You can use the Apple Boot Camp. It allows you to install and run Windows 10 on your Mac hardware. By rebooting, you can switch between Windows and macOS.

Virtualization offers another way to use ShipWorks on Macs. You can use hypervisors like Parallels or VMWare Fusion to pull this off.

Printer Compatibility

ShipWorks supports practically all 8.5”x11” laser and inkjet printers as well as 4”x 6” thermal label printers.

Unlimited Seating

Regardless of the plan you purchase, ShipWorks puts no limit on the number of users you can add. You can install this software on as many computers as you want - at no cost.

In other words, you don’t have to upgrade your subscription as your team grows.

Controllable User Permissions

To keep your team focused, you can easily set and change user permissions. This way, nobody can do more than what their role requires.

Flexible Automation Rules

The ShipWorks software lets you define the rules for automating your processes no matter how complex scenarios get. You can create shipping profiles and set your preferences based on various factors, including:

  • package size
  • merchandise weight
  • shipping methods.

ShipWorks provides a variety of filters to help optimize your workflows.

It can take some time to determine which one suits your operations. But the software will recommend the most popular filters after adding your digital storefronts into the system. You can play with them until you choose the best option.

Seamless Order Management

Using this software, you can automatically split orders if they’re impossible to fulfill from one location. You can combine them too.

Automated ShipWorks features like this give you more flexibility. You can adjust accordingly when you have insufficient inventory counts or unique stock-keeping units (SKUs) in your warehouses.

Further, automated ShipWorks tracking is enabled after a shipping label is printed. If integrated with a data source it supports, it can update the order status on its own.

Speedy Batch Processing

This shipping software enables you to pick and process countless orders at once. You can search, verify, and print labels more quickly with barcode scanning.

ShipWorks prints 16,000 labels per hour. This is twice as fast as comparable software-as-a-service programs.

Automatic Address Verification

The ShipWorks app automatically verifies domestic addresses using the USPS database. In addition, it can determine whether an address is residential or commercial. It also uses Google Maps to visually identify the location.

You can benefit from this feature even if you don’t use USPS as your shipping carrier.

ShipWorks Inventory Management

Like every inventory software worth using, ShipWorks enables you to monitor stock levels across multiple warehouses, bundle goods, etc. Here’s how:

Intelligent Order Routing

Available to ShipWorks Warehouse subscribers only, this feature keeps tabs on your SKUs, product inventory levels, and marketplace rules. This way, it can automatically route orders with multiple warehouse locations in mind.

ShipSense AI

Also called the Automated Intelligence System, it studies your shipping behaviors in order to spot any inefficiency and help eliminate repetitive human error.

Branded Email Notifications

ShipWorks makes it possible to automatically send transactional emails about your shipments to your customers. You can also customize your communications to include your brand elements.

Advanced Reporting

Shipping Profit and Loss, Shipping Cost by Carrier, Order Charges Breakdown, and other ShipWorks reports are customizable.

There’s no direct ShipWorks export to Excel. But you can download ShipWorks reports in HTML and import them to the Microsoft spreadsheet for editing and analysis.

ShipWorks Templates

With a library of templates, you don’t have to create invoices, packing slips, emails, and reports from scratch. You can use the software’s built-in editor to tweak them as you see fit.

ShipWorks templates are royalty-free. Other than HTML, they’re downloadable in plain text, CSV, and XML too.

ShipWorks Insurance

ShipWorks offers up to $5,000 in coverage. By using automation rules, you can ensure specific products regardless of the supported carrier.

ShipWorks’ rates per $100 in shipment value are:

  • USPS Domestic: $0.75
  • USPS International: $1.55
  • FedEx and other carriers: $0.55

Every carrier other than USPS covers the first $100 in shipment value. ShipWorks insurance pays for the amount in excess of the first $100.

Although The Navigators Group underwrites and InsureShip manages its insurance product, ShipWorks directly processes and provides status on claims.

There are licensed claim agents put on standby. ShipWorks disburses most insurance payouts within seven business days.

ShipWorks’ $5,000 maximum coverage per parcel doesn’t apply to packages containing mobile phones and laptops. For these electronics, the limit is $1,000.

ShipWorks’ insurance exclusions include:

  • bulk shipments
  • computer chips
  • cigarettes
  • live animals
  • precious metals
  • precious stone
  • perishables

ShipWorks doesn’t extend insurance to countries' Office of Foreign Asset Control embargoes. At the time of writing this ShipWorks review, 16 jurisdictions are on the list.

The software bills insurance fees on monthly statements.

Best Rate Tool

This software monitors rates from different carriers. This means you can compare them before printing labels and get the most savings per shipment.

Convenient Invoice Consolidation

With ShipWorks, you can manage multiple carrier accounts via a single one.

Local Data Storage

ShipWorks uses local computer hard drives to store any data it collects. This way, all users can retrieve the information they need fast.

Automated Data Backups

By creating automation rules, you can schedule regular ShipWorks cloud and hard drive backups to secure your data.

Auditable User Actions

ShipWorks can capture all individual user actions for immediate review. If you audit these pieces of information regularly, you’ll be able to catch anyone trying to steal or leak sensitive business data.

Regular Software Updates

Before we published this ShipWorks review, the software’s developers have released six updates in 2021 alone. It’s proof that the ShipWorks team listens to feedback and acts on bug reports quickly.

99.99% Uptime

ShipWorks almost never goes down. You can also check the status of its system to learn about any ongoing service interruption in real-time.

ShipWorks’ support team sends email and text alerts. You can get notifications about routine maintenance schedules or any emergency problem.

White-Glove Support

Users get to enjoy unlimited phone and email support. It has been the subject of most glowing ShipWorks reviews.

In addition, you can use ShipWorks’ Community Forum to post your own questions and read discussions. You can also check out the ShipWorks Blog for industry news, success stories, and expert advice.

ShipWorks API

The ShipWorks API (Application Programming Interface) documentation is available for download.

The company is only an email away if you want to collaborate with its development team. Registration is straightforward.

If you build ecommerce software integrations, you can join ShipWorks’ two-way referral program.

ShipWorks Integrations

ShipWorks has 94 integrations available.

This software can pull and consolidate data from at least 6 shipping carriers, including DHL, OnTrac, and GlobalPost.

On top of the popular ShipWorks Amazon integration, you can also connect this desktop app to 12 other online marketplaces, like eBay or Etsy.

Likewise, you can choose from more than 30 integrations with shopping cart software solutions. ShipWorks for Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, and Magento are some of the notable ones.

You can also integrate it with other business tools you may use, like Freshdesk, MailChimp, PayPal, or Dropbox.

ShipWorks Pricing

The software offers two standard monthly plans (Ecommerce and Warehouse). The former is available in two fixed-price editions (Essential and Professional). The latter comes in three (Essential, Professional, and Elite).

Intelligent Order Routing sets Warehouse subscriptions apart from ecommerce ones. Also, being a Warehouse plan user enables you to send shipments from at least two locations.

Here’s the ShipWorks pricing:

ShipWorks Ecommerce

Up to 1,500 shipments/month

Warehouse Professional

Up to 25,000 shipments/month

ShipWorks Warehouse

Up to 5,000 shipments/month

Warehouse Elite

ShipWorks Enterprise

ShipWorks extends exclusive discounts from UPS and USPS. When you ship Priority Mail packages, you can enjoy great savings - as long as your shipments don’t go over MaxSaver cubic requirements.

You can test out the full version of the ShipWorks software with a 30-day free trial. The only caveat is that you need to provide your billing information beforehand.

You can use Visa, Mastercard, Discover, or American Express. If you wish to set up an automatic debit from your savings or checking account, you may be able to do so.

If you don’t want to keep it past the free trial, you’ll have to cancel your account before it’s up. Otherwise, ShipWorks will start billing you monthly.

You may be able to get a full or partial refund if you terminate your paid monthly plan. But there’s no guarantee that you’ll get all or some of your money back. Also, postage and insurance fees are nonrefundable.

If you just want to see ShipWorks in action without signing up for a trial, you can book a demo with no strings attached.

ShipWorks Review - Verdict

Most online sellers have no complaints about this app.

We love ShipWorks’ robust features. It’s flexible, efficient, and easy to customize. Its monthly plans make it painless to handle any increase or decrease in orders. It’s also admirable that the company delivers solid support to all subscribers.

As a Windows-only app, ShipWorks does have technical limitations. We’ll make sure to update this ShipWorks review, once the company launches more options. It would also be nice if the company doesn’t ask for no credit card information for its free trial. It doesn’t have a discretionary refund policy.

Nevertheless, its exclusive carrier discounts can offset any financial risk it presents.
