What Is PowWeb?

PowWeb is an all-in-one web hosting solution focused on individuals and small to mid-sized businesses. It lets you buy a domain name, create a website, and host it. And unlike many other hosting services that are just resellers, this platform builds, manages, and maintains its own servers.

To help users create websites, PowWeb has direct integrations with content management systems (CMS) such as WordPress and Joomla. The company offers additional services such as custom emails and cloud backups.

This service was established in 1999 by entrepreneur Andrew Te. Newfold Digital, a rollup of many web hosting brands, currently owns it. We conducted research and testing to give you an in-depth PowWeb review

Infrastructure and Network

A network of servers, load balancers, storage clusters, and fiber-optic connections support PowWeb website hosting. It uses Dell servers for hosting and the BGP4 protocol to route information through them. It uses Cisco CSS and F5 BigIP load balancing switches to ensure hosting redundancy. Likewise, it uses NetApp storage clusters to guarantee speed and reliability.

PowWeb Features

PowWeb Hosting

PowWeb offers numerous web hosting features. There’s no cap on disk space you can rent from the company. However, it’s contingent on complying with the platform’s terms of service to prevent misuse. Bandwidth, the amount of data and traffic flowing through your website and the general web, is also unrestricted.

Does PowWeb offer unlimited hosting? That’s a good question. The catch is that most customers’ hosting needs aren’t significant, and it supports them with no challenges. However, a few customers become very successful, and their traffic needs become enormous. PowWeb works directly with such customers and moves them away from shared hosting to virtual private hosting. In the end, its server resources are sufficient to handle all its customers' requirements.

The platform uses the MySQL database management system. This open-source database system makes it easy to store and manipulate data for your website. With MySQL, you can retrieve any data by typing in commands. The database understands the structured query language. PowWeb hosting allows you to create up to 75 distinct MySQL databases.

PowWeb also uses the phpMyAdmin tool to administer the MySQL database over the web. You can use phpMyAdmin to perform most administration tasks, such as creating a database, running queries, and adding user accounts.

PowWeb Load Balancing

The platform uses load balancing to ensure customers’ websites are up and running 24/7. Load balancing entails distributing network traffic across multiple servers. It ensures there are no server overloads that can bring down the network. If one server goes down, there’s always another to pick up the slack with no noticeable effect by end-users.

PowWeb Domain Names

PowWeb lets you buy domain names for your websites. The platform offers hundreds of domain name extensions, ranging from common ones like .com and .net to atypical ones like .agency and .academy.

You can type any domain name you want in the PowWeb search bar and buy it immediately, if available. And if the name is already registered, it's not the end of the world. PowWeb lets you pre-register when specific domains become available, though you compete against other customers. As such, you may need to pay a premium to place your registration request above others. Pre-registering a domain gives you a better chance of securing it but does not guarantee it.

You can also transfer domain names registered elsewhere with PowWeb. The company offers free privacy protection, preventing others from accessing domain owners’ info on the WHOIS database. The service also allows you to manage your domain name with custom DNS records.

PowWeb Email

PowWeb offers email services that let you set up professionally-looking addresses tied to your custom domain names. The company provides this service through Google Workspace, Microsoft Exchange, or Roundcube. Google Workspace uses the Gmail web interface most are familiar with. Microsoft Exchange uses the Outlook email client. And Roundcube is an open-source webmail client that’s very customizable.

You must pay a monthly subscription to use Google Workspace and Microsoft Exchange, but Roundcube is free. Google Workspace and Microsoft Exchange are easy to set up. In contrast, Roundcube is complicated and is best for technical users.

PowWeb Backups

To prevent data loss, PowWeb lets you back up your website’s content regularly. You can download backups of your existing websites and restore them anytime. You may do it manually or configure the platform to do it automatically. Manual backup files are stored on your personal computer, while automatic backups store on PowWeb’s servers. If you use manual backups, you must restore them through FTP.

PowWeb Backups

PowWeb E-commerce

PowWeb provides tools for users to create and host online stores. They include shopping carts, payment gateways, SEO tools, and inventory management services. PowWeb integrates directly with Ecwid to let customers sell an unlimited number of products on their websites.

The platform uses PayPal for online payment collection. You can easily receive credit cards, debit cards, and bank account payments with a PayPal business account. PowWeb also integrates directly with Doba, a dropshipping and inventory management platform. You can use Doba to source products if you don't want to manage inventory or shipping directly. The platform connects product suppliers directly with online retailers.

PowWeb Control Panel

You can access and manage your PowWeb products through a dedicated control panel. The panel's Main homepage provides quick access to various products. You can access your FTP dashboard, file manager, webmail, site backups, visitor statistics, DNS settings, etc. This tab also displays announcements and gives you an overview of your disk space and bandwidth consumption.

The PowWeb control panel makes it easy to configure every aspect of your website.

PowWeb DNS

Domain Name System (DNS) is the standard naming system governing the internet. It's the system your browser uses to translate domain names into dedicated IP addresses. PowWeb allows you to configure your domain settings with custom DNS records.

PowWeb Security

PowWeb provides various tools to protect your website from malware, viruses, hackers, and spam. It integrates directly with SiteLock, a website security software suite. SiteLock can automatically scan your website for malware and remove any it detects. You can also block specific IP addresses from accessing your websites to prevent spam. SiteLock offers DDoS protection for your websites by setting up firewalls.

You can also purchase SSL certificates to protect your PowWeb websites. SSL certificates authenticate your website's identity and provide an encrypted connection between your visitors and the server hosting your website.

PowWeb Uptime

There’s no official uptime for PowWeb customers, which is a significant concern. But, we observed the company’s hosting to be very reliable, with minor downtimes. Load balancing helps PowWeb deliver solid uptime to its customers.

PowWeb Speed

PowWeb provides good page loading speeds for its customers. Additionally, you can use SiteLock’s content delivery network (CDN) to speed up your website. The CDN distributes your website's content across global data centers, and customers in whichever region can access the closest ones.

PowWeb Pricing

This platform’s pricing structure is unique. The company offers just one hosting plan, which costs $11.95 per month. It provides hefty discounts for first-time buyers, slashing the price to $3.88 per month. You can pay monthly or for up to three years in one stretch.

PowWeb charges extra fees for additional services such as email, backups, and SiteLock. The company provides a 30-day money-back guarantee following every purchase.

Customer Support

PowWeb provides customer support through email, telephone, and live chat. You can contact the company’s support representatives to help resolve any issues you encounter. Consider visiting the platform’s Knowledge Base first before seeking direct support, as it contains helpful tutorials and user guides.

The company’s customer support staff are occasionally slow to respond to email inquiries, and it’s been a recurring customer complaint.

PowWeb vs. GoDaddy

GoDaddy is a famous web hosting platform and PowWeb alternative. The former offers a better range of hosting options than the latter. For example, PowWeb primarily uses shared hosting, while GoDaddy offers shared, dedicated, and VPS hosting to all customers. The second one is also more reliable due to having a global data center network with more servers than PowWeb.

Customers can choose specific data center regions on GoDaddy but not on PowWeb. The former runs most of its infrastructure on Amazon Web Services (AWS), the world’s most extensive cloud computing network. And it uses over 37,000 servers spread across North America, Europe, and Asia.

You can buy domain names on GoDaddy. It supports over 500 domain name extensions, compared to around 400 on PowWeb.

There are more sophisticated e-commerce features on GoDaddy than on PowWeb. The former integrates with over 40 payment providers, while the other supports only PayPal. Similarly, GoDaddy offers many e-commerce functions that its competitor doesn’t, such as abandoned cart emails, coupons, and WhatsApp integration.

In conclusion, GoDaddy is the better host out of the two.

PowWeb Reviews - Verdict

PowWeb is a suitable web hosting platform for individuals and businesses on a budget. While offering excellent value, customers with considerable hosting needs and bigger budgets are better off with other, more capable hosting platforms. Additionally, as your hosting requirements grow, PowWeb becomes challenging to manage. As such, it's best for small-bandwidth customers.

Buyer beware, though, as we found its user interface challenging and a constant upselling of additional products.

Is PowWeb legit?

Yes, the PowWeb website hosting service is legit. It’s reliable and secure for customers with little bandwidth and disk space needs.

Who owns PowWeb.com?

Newfold Digital, a web hosting conglomerate, owns PowWeb and many other hosting brands.

I’ve been with powweb for about 20 years. All of a sudden my site went down with 404 errors. They kept telling me their “specialists” were looking into it. 5 days later the site is still down. It’s a simple HTML site not a CMS site. Powweb are pathetic, stay away from them.
