HMA VPN can protect your identity and privacy against governments, tech companies, and cybercriminals by hiding your digital footprints and preventing your identifying data from leaking. The company offers client software for Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS devices. The app also supports Linux operating systems and routers, but manual configuration is required.

Like many VPNs, HMA claims to be the best. It’s a bold statement. Our HideMyAss VPN review is here to help you find out if it’s true.

HMA VPN Features

The Hide My Ass app is packed with industry-standard performance and security features. Take a look:

5 Simultaneous Connections

Signing up for HMA’s base subscription allows simultaneous connections on multiple devices. You may install the app across different platforms as many times as you want, but your license is limited only to five devices at once.

Exceeding the maximum number of allowed simultaneous connections may force HMA to suspend your account. If you wish to increase your limit, you may submit a request to the company’s sales team. Or you can install the HMA VPN on your router to safeguard all of the devices connected to it.

20-Gbps-Fast Servers

HMA brags about having some of the faster VPN servers on the market. We tested them for our HMA VPN review and honestly - HMA has all the reasons to be proud.

The servers deployed across the company’s core data centers reach 20 Gbps throughput. This improves the performance of a quarter of all VPN sessions with HMA threefold. The rest are capable of 10 Gbps, which isn’t bad.

Kill Switch

Available for Windows, macOS, and Android devices, the kill switch cuts all network communications when the VPN connection drops until it goes back. That way, you’ll never surf the web unprotected.

Smart Kill Switch

One of the surprises of HMA VPN v5 is the smart kill switch. It opens up a tunnel when you start a predetermined app to protect your internet privacy. A wish of many users of the old HMA VPN, this new feature is designed to work even if your VPN connection is off.

Split Tunneling

An exclusive HMA VPN feature for Android, split tunneling allows you to set specific apps go through the VPN tunnel and the rest connect to the Web as per usual. You won’t need to switch between a secure tunnel and an unencrypted network when running various apps.

Lightning Connect

This feature allows HMA VPN to automatically connect you to the nearest fastest server. It’s handy because figuring out the closest best-performing VPN server can take a lot of work.

IP Shuffle

The Internet Protocol (IP) address is a unique group of numbers that represents a device connected to the Web. It’s the way the server “talks” to your device.

If you don’t want other parties to track your online activity, hiding your real IP address from them is a must. HMA VPN can help by changing the IP address you project toward the internet.

With IP Shuffle, you’ll get a new random IP address as often as you like - just click on “Schedule IP address change” and choose the time window. Since HMA covers hundreds of locations across the globe, even the most determined trackers will struggle to lift the veil on your anonymity.

IP Refresh

IP Refresh can give you a new IP address to circumvent geo-restrictions and render purposely restricted content available for your consumption.

This feature is similar to IP Shuffle in the sense that it gives you a fresh IP address to avoid getting tracked. However, IP Refresh lets you do it at will instead of on a scheduled basis.

Automatic Connection Rules

This feature lets you choose which networks, whether it be WiFi, mobile, or wired, to prompt HMA VPN to run automatically and which ones to disregard.

If you trust a certain network, using HMA’s automatic connection feature can help you enjoy an optimal online experience without compromising your cybersecurity.

Leak Shield

Domain Name System (DNS) leakage can endanger your privacy because the query will reach your internet service provider, blowing your cover in the process. Surfing the Web with no encryption also makes you more susceptible to phishing and malware. To avoid that, HMS uses its own DNS servers to control all of the traffic.

What kinds of DNS leaks can HMA protect you from? It did wonderfully protecting us against IPv4, IPv6, etc. when we tested for this HideMyAss VPN review.

Free Privacy Tools

HMA offers a variety of tools to determine whether your internet privacy and security is at risk with your current VPN.

IP Checker

The IP checker can find out if your supposedly hidden original IP address is visible.  This could happen when a DNS, torrent client, or email service bypasses the one given by your VPN.

If the HMA site manages to track it, that means all websites can.

WebRTC Test

Web real-time communication is a feature used by browsers like Chrome or Firefox that enables live chats, video calls, file sharing, and other media communications to work on web pages. Some sites exploit this feature to identify IP addresses of visitors even if they’re connected to VPN servers.

HMA helps you find out whether your VPN is weak enough against the special JavaScript some sites use to reveal real IP addresses. This tool shares the same goal with the IP checker, except that the WebRTC test focuses on this web browser vulnerability.

Web Proxy

It allows you to access geo-restricted content and explore the internet without exposing your IP address using one of your browser’s tabs. While it’s not a substitute for a standard HMA VPN subscription, the proxy can give you a taste of internet freedom.

HMA VPN Advanced Features

HMA likes to personalize its service for different kinds of users. Here are your options:

HMA VPN Family Plan

The family plan doubles the simultaneous device allotment, letting you connect up to 10 devices instead of 5.

However, the plan doesn’t come in 1- and 6-month subscriptions. In other words, you’ll have to pay at least one year’s worth of VPN service to sign up for it.

HMA VPN for Business

The business plan offers everything in the standard plan and provides you a license, allowing you to connect up to 100 devices.

HMA supports many of the most popular OS. So, you’ll be able to include any of your employees into the network, regardless of the device that they use.

The business plan is available in monthly and annual subscriptions, each at three price points. If you need to connect more than 30 devices simultaneously, you could tailor your plan to cater to your team’s needs.

HMA VPN Servers and Locations

HMA’s network of servers is smaller than those of the industry’s leading VPNs. The company could have chosen to build more servers in certain locations. Instead, it decided to expand its network as wide as possible.

As a result, HMA’s VPN servers are found in 290 locations across over 190 countries.

The company’s global footprint is unmatched, which is why it is highly recommended for users outside of North America and Europe, where VPN servers aren’t as abundant.

In fact, HMA has at least a pair of servers in most locations, including remote Pacific territories, like Niue or Tokelau, and anti-VPN nations, such as China, Iran, Russia, Oman, Iraq, Belarus, and North Korea.

When writing our HMA VPN review, we discovered that connecting to a server can reduce base speed by about 30%.

We saw download speeds of 102 Mbps, 111 Mbps, and 25 Mbps when using VPN servers in the US, the UK, and Japan, respectively.

Generally, the farther the server, the bigger dip in speed you will experience. We advise you to use Lightning Connect to enjoy the best performance. With HMA’s impressive global network, it shouldn’t be difficult to locate a server close enough to where you live.

HMA VPN Privacy and Jurisdiction

Ironically, using HMA VPN puts your internet privacy at a bit of a risk. HMA is headquartered in the UK.

So, what’s the big deal? The UK is a founder of the Five Eyes Alliance and, by definition, also a member of the Fourteen Eyes alliance. Said alliances involve developed Western countries that agree to share intelligence (including the internet activity of their citizens) with one another.

Since HMA is in the UK, the British government might have jurisdiction over your VPN-related data. The nation it’s duty-bound to trace the digital footprints of suspected criminals (such as terrorists and child abusers) recorded by private organizations operating within its borders and share the findings with fellow alliance members.

The good news is that HMA has become a certified no-log company since 2019. This means it won’t keep a record of your exact IP address, DNS queries, connection timestamps, data transmitted across its servers, and browsing, streaming, and app usage histories. HMA has even partnered with VerSprite for privacy audits to let everyone know that it’s no longer keeping tabs on critical user data.

In short, when push comes to shove, the British government might not be able to get any identifying data from HMA, for it really has nothing incriminating to share, to begin with. But do keep the risk in mind.

HMA VPN Security and Protocols

HMA uses the 256-bit AES encryption. This military-grade protection tech insulates the contents of its VPN servers, which are also impervious to DDoS attacks, from all conceivable cyberthreats.

The default protocol HMA uses to implement such cutting-edge encryption on Windows and Android devices is OpenVPN. When it comes to macOS- and iOS-powered hardware, the company prefers IKEv2/IPsec to other tunneling protocols to avoid incompatibility issues.

HMA VPN Leak Test Results

We tested the HMA VPN for DNS leakage and detected none.

To find out whether the kill switch feature works without fail, we disrupted the OpenVPN protocol and looked for IP leakage while changing servers. We found no issues.

HMA VPN and Streaming Services

HMA has five optimized VPN servers for streaming platforms, located across the US, the UK, and Germany.

The company claims that its VPN provides unfiltered access to the US Netflix, which contains 100% of the streaming platform’s titles. HMA renders BBC iPlayer and Amazon Prime content anywhere in the world through its proxy servers.

We put HMA’s specialty streaming servers to test and got mixed results. We couldn’t get to restricted entertainment content 100% of the time. But when we did, we were delighted by the quality. There was no buffering whatsoever.

When it comes to gaming, HMA VPN can help you overcome geo-restrictions, benefit from region-specific sales, and play with more international gamers. Despite the lack of apps for gaming consoles, a router connected to HMA VPN can protect your devices.

In terms of sports, HMA can help you stream live games outside your region. Here are the geo-restricted events you can access through HMA VPN:

English Premier League

  • Amazon Prime (the UK)
  • NBC (the US)
  • BT Sport (the UK)
  • Now TV (most of Europe)

ICC T20 Cricket

  • Hotstar (India)
  • DAZN (Germany)
  • ESPN (Carribean)
  • Willow TV (the US)

  • Fox Sports (the US)
  • BT Sport (UK)
  • beIN Sports (the US)
  • Sky (Germany)
  • DAZN (Germany)

  • TenPlay (Australia)
  • DAZN (Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Canada, the US, and Japan)
  • BT Sport (the UK)
  • VideoPass (virtually everywhere)
  • beIN Sports (the US, Canada, France, Spain, Africa, the Middle East, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia,  and the Philippines)
  • Trans 7 Indonesia (Indonesia)

For American sports fans, HMA VPN is the answer to regional blackouts. This service will give you unprecedented access to your game live, no matter who owns the exclusive broadcasting rights.

How Good Is HMA VPN for Torrenting?

HMA has eight servers optimized for P2P sharing to ensure speedy torrenting without putting privacy in jeopardy. Scattered across the US, the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, France, and Czechia, said servers didn’t disappoint us. Although speed may vary by location, it’s not fatal.

Can HMA VPN Bypass Geoblocks?

Absolutely. With its expansive infrastructure, you’ll almost certainly find a server located where the content isn’t geographically blocked. You’ll be able to watch your show without any worry.

If you encounter an error code, HMA VPN’s IP Refresh can help you change IP addresses instantly. At some point, an acceptable IP will trick a streaming service into giving you access to its restricted content.

Ease of Use

It doesn’t take long to download Hide My Ass VPN. App installation and registration are likewise painless.

Once the Hide My Ass app is up and running, you can connect to the VPN right away using Lightning Connect. Just remember to turn on the kill switch!

HMA VPN v5’s blue interface is calming to the eyes. The network of servers are neatly organized. Countries are categorized by continent; the drop-down menu under each country shows town-level locations. Locations and specialty servers for P2P sharing and streaming are neatly compiled in a favorite list.

Customer Support

Like any decent author who has ever written an HMA VPN review, we had to test the customer support.

You can either try the live chat on the website or submit a ticket. You can also reach the HMA team on Messenger and Twitter.

If you need help but not necessarily technical support, you can consult the company’s knowledge base and join HMA’s community of users to get your pressing questions answered.

HMA has a considerate pricing structure. The company’s targeted prices are reasonable for individual users with different commitments and billing preferences.

Here are the options:

  • Monthly: $10.99
  • Annual: $52.68 ($4.39/month)
  • Biannual: $95.76 ($3.99/month)
  • Triannual: $107.64 ($2.99/month)

HMA VPN Family Plan

  • Annual: $83.88 ($6.99/month)
  • Biannual: $143.76 ($5.99/month)
  • Triannual: $179.64 ($4.99/month)

HMA VPN for Business

  • Monthly
    • 10 simultaneous connections: $19.00/month
    • 20 simultaneous connections: $39.00/month
    • 30 simultaneous connections: $59.00/month
  • Annual
    • 10 simultaneous connections: $129.00 ($10.75/month)
    • 20 simultaneous connections: $239.00 ($19.92/month)
    • 30 simultaneous connections: $311.00 ($25.92/month)

HMA offers a 30-day money-back guarantee. It comes with only one condition: buy HMA VPN directly. Otherwise, you’ll have to ask the authorized reseller that offered the service for a refund if and when you want one.

While we’re glad that HMA provides users with a honeymoon period of sorts through either a 7-day HMA free trial or a money-back guarantee, we have some issue with its base price claim.

By highlighting a triannual subscription’s monthly cost, the cheapest plan HMA occasionally advertises is actually the most expensive one. That causes a bit of confusion and should be worked on.

HMA VPN Review - Verdict

The HMA VPN server fleet is admirable, and its service’s speed acceptable in most cases. Although it doesn’t decode geoblocks consistently, it has workarounds.

However, we hope to see all of HMA VPN’s features available across all platforms. And, as we already mentioned in our HMA VPN review, the billing should be made clearer.

But judging by the latest app version’s improvements, HMA listens to feedback. We wouldn’t be surprised if the Hide My Ass app reached new heights when version 6 comes.
