GOOSE is a Dutch virtual private network provider that has been around since 2015. Despite starting several years later than most of the top names in the business, it has managed to make a name for itself. Its aim is to make a VPN so simple that anyone with zero technical knowledge can use it. In this GooseVPN review, we examine if it can balance ease-of-use with other essential features.

Goose VPN Features

Goose VPN offers several security features that ensure that your devices and your internet connection remain protected at all times. Here’s what you can expect:

Killswitch/Smart Safe

Smart Safe, Goose’s killswitch, protects your IP and devices when the connection with the VPN server is lost. It stops your device from connecting to the internet until the VPN connection is re-established. This feature is available in most VPN services and has now been implemented in the newer versions of the Goose VPN Chrome extension and apps.

Note that GOOSE VPN does not have Smart Safe on by default. You will have to enable it in the settings.

Trusted Networks

GOOSE VPN might lack split tunneling, but it has Trusted Networks. The feature can be considered a poorer cousin of split tunneling.

This allows you to add networks (not apps) that you trust and do not want to connect to using the VPN. For example, if you want to connect automatically to your home network without the VPN, you can add it as your trusted network. Note that the feature is currently available only on macOS and iOS.

GOOSE VPN has an in-built ad-blocker. This means that the pesky ads you usually encounter during your browsing are automatically blocked. This guarantees less data usage, better internet privacy protection, and security against viruses and malware that can sometimes get to your devices through ads.

Unlimited Connections

Goose VPN allows unlimited simultaneous connections on multiple devices and unlimited bandwidth with every subscription plan. Most VPNs have restrictions on the number of devices you can connect to it at any time. Goose VPN makes it easy to protect your connection on all devices.

Router Installation

GOOSE VPN provides additional protection for other internet-enabled devices on your network. It can be installed on routers - something you don't see that often. The pros of having a VPN on your router include more comprehensive and always-on security.

The GooseVPN website has manuals available for information on installing the service on different routers. To access these manuals, you need to have an account.

Goose VPN Servers and Locations

The server network really disappointed us, when we were researching for this Goose VPN review.

It has about 60 VPN servers spread across 25 countries. Most of them are located in the US or Europe. There are servers in only five countries outside Europe and North America (Australia, India, Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore) and none in South America, Africa, or the Middle East. The limited geographical coverage has an expected impact on the speeds you get.

Interestingly, Goose VPN allows users to request a new server location, which is an aspect we haven’t seen with other VPNs. The request form is temporarily down, but users can still contact the support team to submit one. Most new VPN servers set up this way are likely to be virtual servers that cannot deal with high loads the same way physical servers do. However, this is a smart way to attempt to counter the otherwise poor network of servers.

Goose VPN Speed

As mentioned above, we expect the small Goose VPN server list to impact the VPN’s speed performance. A slight decrease in your download and upload speeds are expected with a virtual private network because of the added security measures. The median drop in speeds in the industry is about 65%, so if the speed loss is less, you should be happy.

Speed tests using the different Goose VPN servers show a wide variation in speed losses - from as good as less than 10% download speed loss to as bad as above 90%. The losses are not consistent even when trying out the same server at different points in time.

Finally, the distance of the server location from the user’s physical location is not an indicator of expected speeds. VPN servers located on the other side of the planet sometimes offer better speeds than servers within the same country as the user.

The bottom line is that while Goose VPN seems capable of good speeds, you will have to conduct your own speed tests to figure out which server gives you the best performance. In any case, the inconsistent performance may be an issue for something like gaming, which requires a stable connection.

Let’s say, we weren’t really WOWed and we won’t praise the speeds in our Goose VPN review.

Goose VPN Privacy and Jurisdiction

Goose VPN is based in the Netherlands, a country generally known for relaxed laws and, according to its citizens, complete freedom. However, the Netherlands is a member of the Fourteen Eyes alliance network. This means that there is data surveillance in the country, and your information is very likely shared with agencies from other member countries, such as the NSA in the US. If you are particular about internet privacy, this could raise your concerns.

However, Goose VPN explicitly mentions multiple times on its website that it has a 100% no-logs policy. It also says that if a government authority were to request data related to the browsing history of a user, Goose VPN would be unable to provide it since it saves no such data. Goose also does not have a parent company and is entirely in charge of its own network of servers. That said, your internet privacy is protected from prying eyes.

Given the absence of a privacy audit or a real-life case where the no-log policy has been put to the test, users may have to take the service on its word. During our GooseVPN review research, we didn’t notice any red flags.

Goose VPN Security and Protocols

Virtual private networks provide security by locally encrypting the data packets your device sends to the remote server. The encrypted data is sent to the remote server through a tunnel and then is decrypted. Thus, both the encryption and the tunneling protocol used have a bearing on the security of your data.

GOOSE VPN uses 256-bit AES encryption with all tunneling protocols. This is the VPN industry standard and is considered virtually hack-proof. The protocols supported by Goose VPN are IKEv2, L2TP/IPSec, PPTP, and OpenVPN

Of these, PPTP or Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol is relatively outdated and not great for security. Goose VPN still has it, because it is good for large data transfer and for older machines. L2TP/IPSec is more secure than PPTP and also has some speed advantages. IKEv2 or Internet Key Exchange v2 is a slightly more advanced version of L2TP/IPSec, with better security and good speeds. OpenVPN is the most secure of these protocols but can be marginally slower.

While our Goose VPN review shows that it does an excellent job of encrypting data and using a combination of protocols for overall security, one vital concern is that it doesn’t offer OpenVPN on macOS and iOS platforms.

Apple users will have to make do with the next best option, IKEv2. Some VPNs have an even more advanced protocol like WireGuard on all devices. Being unable to provide OpenVPN to a large section of users is a notable failure.

Goose VPN Leak Test Results

Most VPNs claim to provide complete protection, but you’d be surprised to know how commonly IP and DNS leaks occur. Because of them, your browsing behavior and even your physical location can be detected easily.

GOOSE VPN does not claim to provide IPv6 or DNS leak protection. However, the IP and DNS leak tests we conducted for this GooseVPN review showed no leaks. That’s a significant win for the service and indicates that you can surf the net or download content freely.

Goose VPN and Streaming Services

Not all GOOSE VPN servers can be used for streaming content, but most can. The ones that allow it are clearly indicated in the server list in the GOOSE VPN Chrome extension as well as the apps.

You can use GOOSE VPN for Netflix location-specific content for the US, Canada, the UK, and the Netherlands easily. The service also works well with Hulu. However, Amazon Prime Video and BBC iPlayer, the two platforms that routinely stump VPNs, as well as Disney+ and NBC’s Peacock, are not accessible. We noticed, when conducting streaming tests for the GOOSE VPN review, that there were no lags.

How Good Is Goose VPN for Torrenting?

Goose VPN does allow P2P sharing and torrenting and has some features like zero traffic logs and killswitch, good for P2P sharing. However, there’s a catch here. It allows P2P sharing and streaming on only a handful of its servers. The servers that allow this have “P2P” marked beside their names in the Goose VPN server list in the app.

Given the very small number of approved servers for P2P, your torrenting speeds are likely to be affected. You will have to try out a few to figure out the server that works best for your location. Many users report that the Goose VPN Netherlands servers are the best for the purpose.

Moreover, Goose VPN doesn’t offer port forwarding or SOCKS5 proxy support. Thus, in our view, GOOSE VPN’s utility for torrenting is limited.

Can GOOSE VPN Bypass Geoblocks?

A common use of VPNs is to bypass geoblocks, whether it’s getting through the Great Firewall of China to access restricted sites or viewing content with geo-restrictions on OTT platforms. VPN services can bypass geoblocks properly if they use obfuscated servers. Goose VPN doesn’t.

Users from countries where VPN use is banned have reported no internet access using Goose VPN. Thus, this VPN service is not for you if you live in a region with strict restrictions on VPN usage. However, the company’s co-founder has mentioned that this is an area of focus for the team, and they are taking measures to improve services in countries like China and Iran. We’ll make sure to update this GOOSE VPN review when changes are made.

Ease of Use

Goose VPN’s app is designed for users looking for simplicity. Selecting a server from the overall list or altering the few settings is easy. The versions for different platforms are similar, which simplifies things. One helpful touch is that the app lets you select an alternate view for the Goose VPN server list. You can choose a map that shows different servers’ locations within the same country. This makes it easy to use the same server every time.

Some users have reported having to quit and relaunch the app multiple times when altering the settings. The app has a short update cycle, so the good thing is that any such issues are likely to be ironed out quickly.

Customer Support

From the information on Goose VPN’s website, we can gather that the team lays a lot of stress on customer satisfaction. Customer support—in English, German, and Dutch—is available 24/7 through email and the form in the Support section. While telephone support isn’t available yet, customers have reported satisfactory responses on social media.

Moreover, the extensive searchable knowledge base and FAQ section at the GOOSE VPN website can help solve most problems. The only issue here is that the content seems to be translated from Dutch, and the awkward phrasing in some cases could use a bit of еditing.

Goose VPN Price

Goose VPN does not offer a free trial. Its monthly subscription fee, especially considering that the service lacks some features, is expensive. However, you can save a lot by opting for one of the yearly plans.

The plans are:

  • Monthly - €9.99/month
  • Yearly - €4.99/month
  • Five-yearly - €1.80/month (Sale)

Goose VPN offers a 30-day money-back guarantee for all subscription plans. However, a refund is only guaranteed if your data usage remains under 100 MB

Goose VPN Review - Verdict

Goose VPN is a basic service that will work for you if security and privacy are your main concerns. It has robust encryption features and supports standard protocols. It also allows unlimited simultaneous connections on multiple devices. Its streaming capabilities are reasonably good, provided you are mainly interested in using GOOSE VPN for Netflix content. Despite the limited number of P2P-enabled VPN servers and the absence of some related features, you are unlikely to face significant problems with your torrent downloads, either. Its customer support is prompt enough to help you out if issues do arise.

However, much is lacking in Goose VPN and it does not justify the high monthly subscription fee. The absence of split tunneling, limited OpenVPN support, inconsistent speeds, the poor spread of the server network, and the lack of an obfuscated VPN are just some of the issues. Given that this is a fairly new player on the market, we’ll make sure to see how it fairs and update our Goose VPN review regularly.

Is GOOSE VPN safe?

Yes, GOOSE VPN’s service scores well on essential security features and leak tests, indicating its safety. It also has a strict zero traffic logs policy, which keeps your internet activity safe from government surveillance.

Does GOOSE VPN work with Netflix?

We watched a fair amount of Netflix content when creating this GOOSE VPN review. Despite having a limited number of server locations, it has a consistent ability to unblock Netflix geo-restrictions and maintain good streaming performance.
