What Is GoToMyPC?

ExpertCity’s Klaus Schauser and Brian Donahoo led GoToMyPC's design and development, and it saw the light of day in 1998. In 2003, Citrix Systems took over ExpertCity and spun off all GoTo products. 14 years later, they were acquired by LogMeIn - a popular provider in the world of SaaS and remote work tools.

The original idea was to create a product for individual employees rather than large corporations. With the launch of GoToMyPC Pro, it started targeting small businesses as well.

Fast-forward to 2022, and this tool is among the top remote access tools around. It provides reliable and secure access to one or more computers. As such, it’s a fantastic option for everyone from telecommuters to all companies with IT departments.

The tool does much more than just offer screen sharing, though. Some other goodies include a chat window and transferring files back and forth.

Numerous user-written GoToMyPC reviews suggest the tool is efficient.

Still, I decided to take a look myself and see whether that really is the case.

GoToMyPC Features

GoToMyPC comes with a variety of handy features. Let’s glance at the most prominent among them.

Cross-Platform Access

Whether you want to access your remote machine or solve an employee’s technical issue, you can do it regardless of what device you’re using. For example, GoToMyPC’s cross-platform feature lets you access a macOS desktop through your tablet.

Just keep in mind that functions like chat, sound, and remote printing vary by device.

File Transfer

Another thing I liked about this software is the GoToMyPC file transfer feature. Long gone are the days when remote access tools only allowed you to operate the machine you connect to. Now, you can transfer files from one device to another as well.

The best part of it is how easy moving stuff back and forth is. All you have to do is copy and paste or drag and drop a file to transfer it to another device.

Copy and Paste

Above, I mentioned how you can copy and paste files between devices using this software. However, with GoToMyPC, the copy-and-paste function works with absolutely everything.

For instance, you can select and copy a chunk of text on one device and paste it on the other one.

Guest Invite

Many user-written GoToMyPC reviews mention guest invite as one of the software’s key features. It lets you temporarily share your computer desktop with someone and select for how long the invitation will be valid.

This feature is great for demos and tech support.

Multi-Monitor Support

Some remote access software cause issues when accessing machines with multiple monitors. Given how many of us use dual-screen setups, this can turn out to be a huge problem.

With the GoToMyPC software, nothing stops you from connecting to devices with more than one monitor. You can choose which screen (or multiple screens) you want to access in your session.

Just seeing what’s going on your remote computer isn’t enough. No matter what you’re doing on the other device, you want to be able to hear all system sounds, music, etc.

GoToMyPC delivers a complete remote access experience, by letting you hear and control all sounds coming from the other device.

Remote Printing

PC users can print files using any devices connected to their local computer. There are two ways to do it:

  • can select the option from the print window
  • enable a local printer manually

Both macOS and Windows users can use the GoToMyPC remote printing feature.

Desktop Shortcuts

Accessing another device using this software is pretty straightforward. All you have to do is visit the GoToMyPC website, log into your account and connect to it.

You can make the entire process even less complicated, however. The tool lets you create shortcuts for each device you want. So, in just a few clicks, you can have a desktop icon for accessing your personal computer.

Two Factor Authentication

Breaching the GoToMyPC security is almost impossible. You can rely on the two-factor authentication mechanism.

If you want to start a session, you first have to provide two authentication factors to verify yourself.

LogMeIn Antivirus

Let’s discuss LogMeIn’s security software real quick. The company’s antivirus is powered by Bitdefender, and it does a phenomenal job of keeping your data secure.

It arrives with your GoToMyPC subscription without any extra fees.

Easy Installation

Many GoToMyPC user reviews rave about how easy it is to install the software. I can confirm.

The process is as convenient as it gets, and you can begin using the software in just a few minutes. You can access a device even without restarting your computer.

Ease of Use and Interface

The GoToMyPC interface is intuitive and simple

In fact, you don’t even need the software on the device you’re using.

As long as it’s installed on your remote machine, you can access it through your web browser. All you have to do is log into your account and verify yourself.

On your remote device, where the software is installed, you have a wide variety of options you can choose from when it comes to remote devices.

For instance, in the preferences section, you can adjust the settings either for better speed or for better appearance. Depending on what you opt for, the software will disable some display settings such as desktop wallpaper, font smoothing, and effects.

GoToMyPC remote desktop also lets you switch between different options, such as full-screen mode and window mode. Another thing you can do is to scale the host's screen to fit your screen.

The browser-based interface works great when you’re using a PC or laptop. If you want to gain remote administration access using a smartphone, however, you’re going to need a specifically designed app.

The app utilizes clever touchscreen substitutes to let you control both the mouse and keyboard on your computer. It also lets you zoom in 300% on a part of the screen.

The GoToMyPC app works on Android and iOS, as well as on Kindle.

GoToMyPC Security

GoToMyPC offers top-notch security.

It employs 256-bit encryption to keep the communication link between devices as secure as possible. This means hackers can’t get their hands on files and activities you conduct remotely.

Another key aspect of the GoToMyPC security measures is the feature is the two-factor verification. With the software asking you both your password and the access code for your remote computer, you don’t have to worry about someone else taking control of your device.

Plus, there's a limit on the number of login attempts which also protects you from unauthorized logins.

When letting someone you don’t know well enough to look at your screen remotely, you have an option to lock the mouse and keyboard. This ensures they can’t make any changes to your device.

GoToMyPC Support

Providing customer support via email has practically become a standard across all industries. Unfortunately, the folks behind the GoToMyPC remote access software don’t offer that option.

Instead, if you want to reach out to their customer support team, you have to do it via phone. The good news is that they take calls 24/7 and can help you with any issue you come across.

But before you call them, you can take a look at the handy FAQ and blog sections.

There’s also the community forum where you can get help from LogMeIn contributors. There are already plenty of topics with useful information about this remote access software you can check out.

I fielded a few test-drive questions in the LogMeIn community section and received a response from a contributor in about 24 hours.

All in all, although the company offers quality customer support, I’m slightly disappointed there’s no email option.

GoToMyPC Pricing

You can choose between three GoToMyPC price plans depending on how many users and host computers you want to connect.

Two out of three pricing plans you can choose between are discounted 20% if you opt for an annual purchase.

Before you make any decisions, though, you can test the software through a free trial for seven days. The best part is that the GoToMyPC trial provides access to all features you get in all price plans available!

Here are all subscriptions:

Personal plan

The plan is for one user. It includes unlimited remote access, end-to-end encryption, file transfer & sync, remote printing, mobile apps, multi-factor authentication, free 24/7 support, real-time diagnostics, and LogMeIn antivirus.

Pro plan

The plan is for two to 50 users. It includes all features available in the Personal plan plus administration of accounts and users, central billing for users, easy switch between users, monitor usage, comprehensive reporting, and remote deployment.

Corporate plan

$28/Month (billed annually)

The plan is for more than five users. They get all features available in the Pro plan plus Wake On LAN (WOL), manage groups features and security, single sign-on (beta), more than 1 administrator, and in-session reboot.

GoToMyPC prices are relatively high, but you get great service no matter which of these plans you choose.

GoToMyPC Review - Verdict

GoToMyPC gets the job done. It doesn’t only let you see the remote desktop, but it comes with all sorts of features that work together to deliver the ultimate remote access experience.

When compared to other remote desktop software available, GoToMyPC is on the more expensive end. This is justified, however, considering how good the service is.

One of the downsides is that it doesn’t come with a free plan for private, non-commercial use like TeamViewer does.

Given how secure the software is, GoToMyPC remote desktop software can serve as a good alternative to cloud computing for companies working with sensitive data. Especially with all the features you get in the corporate plan.

Why not give the GoToMyPC free trial a try? I promise you won’t be disappointed.

How safe is GoToMyPC?

GoToMyPC keeps users and their data safe at all times. The security features include a two-factor authentication system, data encryption during transfers, strong passwords, host screen blanking, etc.

How much does GoToMyPC cost?

The one-month GoToMyPC personal plan is available at $44 per month. If you decide to have it billed annually, the price decreases to $35 per month. Pro and Corporate plans come with different prices. Check out the GoToMyPC review above to learn more about them.

Can GoToMyPC wake sleeping computer?

Yes, GoToMyPC can wake all sleeping devices that have the Wake On Lan (WOL) option turned on. To do this, you first have to enable the WOL feature in the computer’s Basic Input/Output System (BIOS). Just keep in mind that only users with the GoToMyPC corporate plan can use this function.

How do I cancel GoToMyPC?

Plenty of outdated user-written GoToMyPC reviews mention how difficult it was to cancel your subscription. The only way to do it until a few years ago was through the phone. Luckily, this is no longer the case, and you can cancel your subscription through the billing information page on the GoToMyPC website.
