Best for: Capturing and editing screen recordings.
What Is Snagit?
Snagit is a popular screen recording software developed by TechSmith. While recording screens is its main feature, it can also capture your webcam and audio. Users love it for its simplicity and the editing tools that allow you to create a wide variety of content.
Even though some users have reported on frequent crashes, the majority praises it highly.
What Is Snagit Software Used For?
Snagit is used to record anything on your screen. It can capture a complete desktop, a window, a region, or a scrolling window from any app or website. If you need to record audio as well, Snagit gives you the option.
The software comes with image editing features. When it comes to video editing, Snagit lets you trim, reduce the video’s size, and export it in a few different formats. Both individuals and businesses use it to create presentations, offer video feedback, and use screenshots to improve their team’s workflow.
Snagit Features
Over the years, Snagit has grown to much more than a simple screen recording software. Let’s take a look at the Snagit 2022 features.
All-in-One Capture
Flexibility is essential, especially when sharing your screen with others. Snagit gives you the option to record your complete desktop, select a region, a window, or a scrolling screen. You have full control over what is recorded.
Snagit Scrolling Capture
The page you record may not always be static. This software can capture vertical and horizontal scrolls, indefinite webpages, and long messages.
Grab Text
If you ever find a text that you can’t copy from the page, document, or screen capture, Snagit can help you extract it. Once you’re done recording, the Editor will open automatically. By using the Grab Text tool, you can easily copy and paste any text to another document without having to retype it.
Screen Recorder
The screen recorder is great for creating instructional videos or grabbing frames of another video. You can save your videos as mp4 or GIFs to share them online. Many other Snagit reviews agree that this is one of the software’s most valuable features.
Webcam Recorder
TechSmith Snagit software lets you add a personal touch to your videos, as you can toggle between your webcam and screen recording.
Audio Recorder
Especially useful when creating how-to videos, Snagit lets you capture audio together with your visuals. You can use a separate microphone or one that’s built into your device.
iOS Screen Recorder
Snagit also has a free iOS app that you can use to record your mobile screen. It works on iPad, iPhone, and iPod. With the app, you can record screens and share them with the Snagit desktop version for further editing.
If you’re looking for Snagit for Android, you can download the TechSmith Fuse app. This app has Snagit, Camtasia, and TechSmith Relay.
Editing Tools
As mentioned before, Snagit is praised for its many editing features on top of its recording abilities, including:
Templates
You’ll find the option to create an image or video from scratch with the use of pre-made Snagit templates. Using them will save you a lot of time and make your content look a lot more professional.
Trim Videos
If you want to remove some parts of your videos, Snagit comes with some fantastic editing tools that allow you to do so. The trim is one of them.
However, many other Snagit reviews mention that the software is prone to crashing if you try to save a longer video after editing. Unfortunately, there’s nothing you can do but relaunch the program and record since your video won’t be saved.
Add Annotations
Add personality to your recordings and screenshots with the annotation tool. Select some of the premade styles in Snagit Editor or make your own.
Add Text
Adding text to your screenshots or videos is easily done with Snagit. With the editor, you can add text and drag it to the desired place. You can also select the text styles, import your own, change the fonts, color, size, and outline for a more personalized look.
Replace Text
Similar to the Grab Text feature, this Snagit tool recognizes any text in the recorded screenshots and provides the ability to edit. You can change the fonts, words, color, and size.
Blur Tool
If you have information in your screen recording you don’t want to share, you can use the blur tool. The editor lets you blur certain parts of the screen. You can choose between eight styles and their intensity.
Cut Out Tool
This Snagit tool lets you remove part of your image. You can use it to cut images in various ways.
Pen and Line
The pen lets you draw freehand and the line feature creates straight lines with ease. You can change the theme, color, shape, and shadow.
Highlighter Tool
By using the highlighter, you place a rectangular overlay on parts of your image or text. You can select a color and the opacity to increase its effect.
Selection Tool
This tool lets you select a part of your image and manipulate it. If you click, hold, and drag it away, you’ll be left with a transparent background.
Step Tool
Snagit video capture tool is handy for recording instruction videos, as it offers the option to add steps. The recorded workflow can be marked with automatically increasing numbers or letters.
Simplify
This Snagit software feature lets you create simplified outlines in your screenshots. It’s easy to replace images and text with shapes and lines for a more user-friendly overview.
Stamps
After creating a screenshot, you can add stickers to it. These stamps are specifically designed for screenshots and come in many categories, including business, food and drink, holiday, and symbols.
Share Files
Inside the Editor, you can find the Share button, which allows you to share your work via email, Word, Excel, Screencast, Evernote, Slack, and social media. From there, you can also print your screens if necessary.
Exporting Options
There are more than 15 export options in Snagit screen recording software, including GIF, BMP, EPS, PDF, and PNG.
Ease of Use and Interface
Taking a first look at the interface, we thought it looked slightly outdated and confusing as everything is tightly packed together. But once we observed it better, we realized that there’s no need for a bigger window.
On your left, you’ll see the capturing features. You can create presets and use them in future recordings. The Open Editor button will take you to the Editor where you can manipulate the media you record. The Editor itself has image editing features and, while they are slightly basic, they are easy to use. Snagit video editing abilities are also limited.
While we didn’t experience this while testing it, many other Snagit reviews mentioned that the software will crash without saving your edited video.
Snagit Price
While there isn’t a free version available, there is a 15-day free Snagit trial. If you decide to buy Snagit, there are a few pricing options. The company offers a multi-buy discount for the business, education, and government packages. Prices start at:
- Individual - $62.99
- Business, single license - $62.99
- Education, single license - $37.99
- Government, single license - $53.99

All plans come with a 30-day money-back guarantee.
Snagit Review - Verdict
The Snagit screen capture software is one of the best on the market. It has everything you need to safely record your screen or webcam, take screenshots, and edit your recordings. The tools help you create interesting videos, simplified explanations, and professional presentations.
Snagit 2022 comes with an editor feature, however, it may be a bit too simple for some. We did love the grab text tool, but we found that video editing is as basic as can be. Our Snagit review would also like to point out that many users have complained about crashes and losing their footage while using the software.
