When discussing MP3 players, one question inevitably comes up:

Who needs one nowadays when your phone can store and stream music just as well?

Here’s the deal.

Phones and streaming services are great. But there’s just something about the feel of a dedicated music playback device that gets lost in translation.

For starters, physical buttons.

You can control the music on your AP80 Pro-X via small buttons on the side – an option that phones simply lack. The device does have a touchscreen, of course. But tons of people prefer the feel of physical controls. If you’re one of those, the AP80 Pro-X is right up your alley.

Then, headphone jacks.

Most smartphones nowadays don’t even have those. But the Hidizs device has not one but two. And they are of much higher quality than those found on your phone. It has one Single-ended 3.5mm jack and one Balanced 2.5mm.

Better controls and better quality.

If those two aspects aren’t reason enough for you to invest in a music player, strap in. There’s a lot more this small device has to offer. Let’s dive in and see if all the positive Hidizs AP80 Pro-X reviews out there are truly warranted.

What’s in the Box?

Unboxing this little gadget is simple enough.

Hidizs AP80 Pro-X inside the box

The device is front and center, and you’ll immediately notice how tiny it actually is. It’s easy to get used to the massive screens we carry around in our pockets nowadays. But this thing fits in your palm no problem.

What else?

You’ll also find a double-sided USB-C cable, as well as a regular Type-A to Type-C adapter.

What you won’t find is a power adapter.

Thankfully, those are pretty easy to come by, but it’s still disappointing to see.

The rest of the contents include a manual, stickers, and a Hidizs VIP card with a 10% discount coupon.

Now let’s take a look at the player itself.

Despite its tiny size, it’s actually capable of quite a lot. Here’s a list of the main features you’ll want to consider when buying one of these models.

Build Quality

The body is made out of aluminum alloy, making it feel quite premium.

But most importantly, it’s very lightweight: only 72 grams. This makes it perfect for taking along for a jog or any activity where you’d want to leave your phone behind.

The back of the device also consists of glass. On the sides, you have three buttons. Play and pause, skip forward, and a ‘back’ button. And, of course, a volume knob.

Hidizs AP80 Pro-X Side

But despite its compact size and light body, one thing that sticks out is the slightly awkward design. It’s a square shape, rather thick, and with sharp edges. But that’s far from a dealbreaker.

Naturally, battery life is important for any portable device.

Does the player’s size limit its capacity?

As it turns out, not really.

The device takes around an hour to reach a full charge, which is pretty decent. From there, depleting the battery will require around eight to ten hours of non-stop use.

The battery life actually varies depending on which output you use. If you utilize the balanced 2.5mm output port, expect shorter battery life by about two hours or so.

Operating System

The Hidizs AP80 Pro-X runs a custom OS called HiBy.

And while it isn’t revolutionary, it instantly feels familiar to anyone who’s ever used Android or iOS before. It also takes full advantage of the device’s touchscreen capabilities. It’s both intuitive and easy to navigate.

It does have one quirk, though.

And that is how long it takes for assets to fully load. Especially when it comes to album art. While scrolling through your playlist, it takes almost a full second for everything to load properly.

And that’s just a bummer, especially if you rely on album art for browsing, like I do. Other Hidizs AP80 Pro-X reviews also mention similar hang-ups.

Ebook Reader

You got that right – you can read ebooks on your MP3 player.

The device lets you view any .txt files you have through the Books app on the main screen.

As you can imagine, the AP80 Pro-X’s tiny screen doesn’t make for the greatest ebook reader. And while it certainly seems like a redundant feature, it’s at least nice to have.

Step Counter

This little device can also serve as a step counter. Good thing is that its measurements are correct - it gives you the exact number of steps you took.

On the downside, the AP80 Pro-X doesn't give you any additional information, like distance traveled, speed, etc.

Expandable Storage

If you buy the AP80 Pro-X, you’ll require an SD card to store your music (and ebooks!) on.

There’s an SD card slot on the side, and it supports storage space of up to 512 GB. I’d say this is more than enough to hold all your files.

If you’re wondering if there’s an SD card included in the box, the answer is No. Not that I expected one.

But to be honest, given how necessary it is to have an SD card, it would’ve been a nice gesture.

In case you’re wondering if the AP80 Pro-X can work with your Bluetooth speakers or headsets: yes, it can.

The Hidizs player utilizes Bluetooth 4.2. So while it’s not 5.0, it does the job fairly decently.

But it also works the other way around. You can control the device through your smartphone, as the Bluetooth is bidirectional. This lets it act as a DAC of sorts.

It’s time to talk about the most important aspect of this Hidizs AP80 Pro-X review:

The music itself.

Rest assured, the player’s sound quality is as good as it can be, and the music sounds fantastic. The Balanced 2.5mm headphone output provides an even richer experience than anything you can find on a mobile phone.

The AP80 Pro-X supports pretty much all high-quality audio file types, too.

Hidizs Flac file support

It also has a significantly higher dynamic range than most smartphones, at 116 dB. This lets you pick up on the quietest sounds while leaving the loud parts undistorted.

While it’s nice to have physical buttons to control your music, let’s not forget about the touchscreen display. And to its credit, it’s actually pretty responsive and easy to use despite the small screen.

The bottom line is this:

Even with some UI hang-ups like slow loading times, the performance of the AP80 Pro-X alone is worth it. You simply won’t get music playback of such high quality from a smartphone.

Hidizs AP80 Pro-X Pricing

Now: cost.

The Hidizs AP80 Pro-X retails for $189, which is pretty mid-range in terms of price. You also have options for additional bundle packages of varying costs through the official website. Among the available choices are accessories like earphones, leather cases, and amps.

The AP80 Pro-X is available in three colors – black, blue, and gray.

If you decide to purchase a bundle, you can also select the color of your accessory. Although, color options are a bit limited.

The good news is that Hidizs provides free shipping.

Upon purchase, you can expect your product to arrive within 5-10 business days. But if you want it delivered faster, there’s the Express Shipping option. It’s available in all regions and will set you back an additional $30. Express Shipping orders arrive within 3-5 business days.

Keep in mind those numbers are averages.

If you live in a particularly remote area, your order can take as long as 40 business days.

What about refunds?

If you are unsatisfied, you can return the product within 14 business days of purchase. This window seems unreasonably tight, especially since you might not have even received your AP80 Pro-X by then.

You also have to apply for a return to be eligible for a refund.

To be approved, the device needs to be in the same condition as received and in its original packaging. If you do check all those boxes, it’ll take a few days for your money to be transferred back.

To many people, owning an MP3 player in the current decade might seem redundant. But Hidizs’ device carries clear advantages over simply using a smartphone for your music.

So, in conclusion to this Hidizs AP80 Pro-X review, what does this player offer?

Not one but two headphone jacks with higher quality than a typical smartphone. Bluetooth capabilities for your wireless devices and an intuitive, albeit somewhat slow, user interface. All that for a base retail price of $199.

It goes without saying, if you value your music, the AP80 Pro-X is a worthy investment.

My fascination with technology began from quite an early age thanks to computers and video games. Nowadays, I love anything related to music production and astronomy. Coincidentally (or is it?), both of those have a great deal to do with tech. Honestly, most of the stuff that can be accomplished with modern electronics kind of seems like magic to me. This is why I feel this strong need to constantly learn more about it and talk about it, almost to the detriment of others.
