What Is X-Sense?

X-Sense is a US-based company that has been in the home security game for a while. It devotes itself to designing products for protecting properties from different forms of fire and other hazards. It has made a name for itself by developing a range of smoke detectors. Over time, the company started adding more items to its range.

After creating some of the top products for smoke and carbon monoxide detection, it was a natural transition for X-Sense to build its own home security system. After all, with 2.5 million housebreaking incidents taking place every year in the US, there’s plenty of room for such gadgets on the market.

X-Sense soon introduced its own security system and cameras to its catalog.

So, is X-Sense a good brand? And can you trust it to keep your home safe? The answer is – Yes. Just bear in mind that its take on home security falls under budget kits, and you shouldn’t expect the same you’d get from a premium system.

How Does the X-Sense Home Security System Work?

X-Sense offers a bear-bones product that can keep both you and your property safe. While it does so in a more budget-friendly fashion, it’s still an effective tech you can rely on.

As the name suggests, the kit X-Sense offers is a system of multiple sensors that track motion. It includes entry sensors that go around the doors and windows of your home. In case of a break-in, the burglars have to enter your property somehow. If you have these detectors at each entry point, the system will alert you.

The sensors will detect movement and trigger the X-Sense alarm. This means that anyone inside the home will hear something going on and react quickly. If no one’s home, you can still probably count on your neighbors to call the police, given that the system is loud enough for anyone living nearby to hear it.

Of course, if you’re away and one of the sensors detects movement, you’ll be notified as well. The system will do this through its native app. You’ll receive a push notification and know exactly which detector has sent it.

Motion sensors feature a 110° detection angle and range of up to 39 feet (12m). The entire system has a 1.25-mile range. This shows that the system from X-Sense isn’t aimed at small homeowners only. Although a relatively simple package, this security kit can keep larger homes safe as well. However, you might have to get additional sensors to cover it all. If you want to protect your shed, basement, and other small spaces, you can fully rely on X-Sense to do it.

There’s a lot more to talk about in this kit. For example, what happens if there’s a power outage and someone tries to force their way into your home? Well, you can still count on it to do its job. That’s because the base station comes with a backup battery that lasts up to 12 hours when the device isn’t connected to a power source.

One of the best things about this smart home security system is that you don’t need anyone’s help to set it up. You don’t even have to be into DIY to do it. Five minutes is more than enough to go through the entire process.

Also, the only piece of equipment you need to use is a screwdriver. Wall anchors are easy to mount, and you also get the screws. If you opt for adhesive strips instead of hanging sensors on the wall, you don’t even need a screwdriver.

It’s highly recommended that you don’t place sensors in direct sunlight. Instead, pick a spot high in a corner where it’ll have a good view of the room.

X-Sense makes connecting the sensors extremely simple. You only need to scan the QR code on the base unit. Then you can hook it up to your Wi-Fi network, name the device, and play with the settings.

X-Sense app and connected sensors

You also have to connect the other units to the app, which is also extremely easy since the software lets you add new devices in just a few taps. Simply follow the steps on-screen, and you’ll set up all units in no time.

The next step should be to test your X-Sense Home Security Alarm System. The special testing feature in the app can help you do this. If you discover no issues, your setup is up and running. All that's left is placing the sensors in the appropriate places. After that, you can go on with your daily life knowing your property is fully protected.

X-Sense Home Security Kit Features

This smart security system offers some nice features to ensure your home is protected 24/7.

Completely Wireless

One of the most daunting parts of dealing with security hardware is cables. These things are not only an eyesore but can become a real obstacle when you want to reach for something.

With this system, you don’t have to worry about it because of the X-Sense wireless LoRa feature.

LoRa stands for Long Range, and it’s a spread spectrum modulation technique. Basically, the transmissions jump from one place to another at a particular time and ensure all devices in the range work as one. The 1.25 km range it offers ensures you can place the sensors anywhere you want and still get signal.

Of course, there’s one cable included in the set – the one that connects the base unit to a power source.

Not so long ago, wireless home security systems were considered premium, and only companies and rich people were able to afford them. X-Sense proves you can now introduce this tech to your home on a budget.

Customizable Security

Almost everything X-Sense offers in its wireless security system is customizable. Using the app on your phone, you can control base station sound, adjust the brightness level, switch between different alarm tones for each sensor, and tailor your Home/Away modes.

In other words, X-Sense provides all the security hardware for your home. It’s then up to you to create a home monitoring system according to your likes.

Alexa Integration

The system also offers Amazon Alexa connectivity. This feature wasn’t always available, and X-Sense users were quite happy about the upgrade. It allows you to link the system to your Amazon account and control it using voice commands.

When I tested the X-Sense Alexa feature for this review, it worked like a charm.

Google Assistant Integration

Just like with Alexa, you can pair up your X-Sense system with Google Assistant. It’s another feature added to the service after the kit first appeared on the market.

I tested this feature and encountered no problems in the process. The information I found in user-written X-Sense reviews confirms this as well.

Long-lasting Battery Sensors

Another thing X-Sense boasts on its website is the long-lasting batteries. Since the motion and entry sensors you get don’t operate the same way, they also come with different batteries.

According to the manufacturer, the motion sensor battery can hold for up to five years, while the entry sensor one can even reach up to ten.

What’s in the Box?

The X-Sense Security System arrives as an eight or five-piece set. While unboxing my kit, I found all components intact and in shape.

You get the following in the box:

  • Base unit
  • Motion sensors
  • Entry sensors
  • Remote Control
  • Charger for the base unit
  • Batteries for the sensors
  • Mounting screws and anchors
  • Acrylic foam tapes
  • Manual
  • An X-Sense sticker

Base Unit

x-sense base unit

Let’s talk about the main unit first. It’s the system’s brain that connects to all other components and forms a wireless network that keeps your property safe. In the picture, the main part may appear large, but that’s only compared to the other units. The hub is quite small and doesn’t look out of its place wherever you put it.

On the top of the device, there’s an illuminated bar that displays the hub’s current status. That way, you can clearly see if the alarm has been triggered.

The base unit also features a downward-facing speaker grill on the rear side of its case. This helps amplify the sound it creates, eventually reaching 105dB.

Another thing you’ll find on the base station is a USB-C connection port. You can use it to charge the device or connect it to your computer. Although you can make it a part of your smart system wirelessly, it’s nice to know there’s another option available as well.

Motion and entry sensors

As part of the eight-piece set, you also get two traditional motion sensors and four entry sensors to put around the doors and windows of your home. There’s one standard motion sensor and two entry sensors in the five-piece set.

Compared to what you get with some of the top home security systems, all X-Sense motion capture sensors are somewhat large. They may intrude on your interior a bit, but the manufacturer paid some extra attention to the design, so you won’t hate having them around.

With this system, you don’t need to keep your phone on you while at home. Instead, you can control your security system with the remote you get with the kit. It has a 650 ft signal, meaning you’ll be in range to use it regardless of what area of your home you’re in.

You can use the X-Sense remote control to arm or disarm the alarm, let the hub know you’re there, and send an SOS signal in case of an emergency.

The Rest

As mentioned earlier, X-Sense provides everything you need to set up your new system. So, the set also includes adhesive stickers, screws with anchors, and mounts, which are already attached to the back of the sensors. The mounts are removable, and if you don’t want to hang sensors on the wall, you can easily take them off.

You can also find batteries for all components in the box. They’re quite large and not what you’d usually find in such systems. However, they’re not custom-made, and you can easily order replacements on Amazon.

To ensure this X-Sense Home Security System review is on point, I tested the kit in my own home. After reading all the information on the DIY installation process, I had no issues setting it up and indeed managed to complete it in several minutes.

I used the adhesive stickers rather than wall mounts. This made the installation even easier.

I noticed that the main unit has a very powerful in-build speaker. So, should the time come, you can count on it to let both you and your neighbors know that something’s going on.

As I mentioned earlier, the motion detectors are somewhat large, but they compensate for it in terms of performance. They have 110-degree detection to cover large areas of any room. The same goes for the entry sensors, and you can expect them to catch any movement around doors and windows in your home.

I didn’t experience any hiccups while testing the system. The base station never disconnected from the internet. Some X-Sense user reviews mentioned this might happen if you put the base unit in a hiding place. As long as it’s in an open area, you’ll face no problems.

Whenever I had the security system on and tried to open the door, I was instantly alerted on the app. Then when I closed it, the notifications on the app altered me promptly as well.

X-Sense Home security app alarm

It’s also important to mention that when the system detects motion, it sends you a notification that stays open for slightly over one minute. It doesn’t send additional notifications about new motions that occur within this time frame.

X-Sense App

The biggest selling point of this security kit is the mobile app. It lets you sync up your set from afar via phone. This means you can add, remove, and adjust the sensors you use whether you’re at home, at work, or on vacation. If you want to, you can also customize the base station sound and select the alarm level through it.

While it does everything you want, the app has a minimal number of functions, which keeps things quite simple. Each unit has its own settings screen where you can name it for easier navigation. That’s also where you can adjust alarm tone and volume according to your taste and needs. You can choose between four pre-designed tones for your system.

In the history section, you can quickly look at any events the app recently recorded. So, even if you think you accidentally missed a notification, you can always double-check it using this feature.

To use the X-Sense app, you first have to set up your account. That’s because you don’t want anyone unauthorized to change your settings whenever they feel like it. Once you register your account, you can share access with other household members.

Also, if you have X-Sense Home Security systems on more than one property, you can easily create separate profiles on the app for each of them.

Another important thing to mention is that the app includes detailed guides on connecting it with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant.

X-Sense Home Security System Pricing

If you’ve decided to rely on the X-Sense to keep your property safe, you probably wonder how much the kit costs.

You can order the system from the official X-Sense website, or on Amazon. As I mentioned earlier, there are two different sets you can choose between. Let’s check them out:

Five-Piece Kit

Includes the base unit, one motion sensor, two entry sensors, and a remote control.

Eight-Piece Kit

Includes the base unit, two motion sensors, four entry sensors, and a remote control.

Also, at the time of writing this review, X-Sense offers a coupon you can use to get a 10% discount. All you have to do is copy the code from the product page and paste it into the discount code bar during the checkout process. However, we have an even better deal for our readers. If you use this code CHTG0220 you'll get 20% off on ALL X-Sense products

Another huge plus for X-Sense products is that you don’t have to pay for any additional subscriptions to get all of the app’s functionalities. This isn’t always the case with home security electronics.

If you’re unhappy with the kit you got, you have 30 days to return it. Just keep in mind that the system has to be in the same condition you got it in. Also, you have to send it back to X-Sense in its original packaging.

In case the kit is defective or damaged, the company will exchange it for you.

The system you receive is under one-year warranty. If it stops working during the first twelve months, all you have to do is contact X-Sense’s technical support team (available via email and phone in the US, UK, and Germany), and they’ll instruct you on what to do.

From the simplistic DIY installation process to actually using the system, I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised by the X-Sense Home Security Kit. All components worked as stated on the company’s websites.

The alarm sound may be a bit loud, but after all, that’s what it’s supposed to do. So, no matter what area of your property you’re at, it’ll alert you to danger. And if you’re someplace else, you’ll still get a notification on your phone.

The only real downside is you don’t get a camera as a part of the system so that you can monitor your property when you’re not there. However, you can’t expect additional security hardware at the current price.

All in all, I’m happy with how the kit performed for my X-Sense Home Security System review. It’s one of the best home security systems in its price range. I’d definitely recommend it if you’re looking for a budget kit for keeping your small- to mid-sized property safe from break-ins.
